Athar al-Qiraat al-Quraniyya fi al-Sinaa al-Mujamiyya: Taj al-Arus Namudhajan (The Impact of Quranic Readings on Lexicographical Craft: Taj al-Arus as a Model) is a specialized linguistic study by Abd al-Razzaq Hammuda al-Qadusi examining the role of Quranic variant readings (qira'at) in Arabic dictionary making, focusing on al-Murtada al-Zabidi's (1145–1205 AH) monumental lexicon Taj al-Arus .
Background and Methodology
The work originated as a doctoral dissertation submitted to the Department of Arabic Language at the Faculty of Arts, Helwan University, in 1431 AH / 2010 CE, under the supervision of Ragab Abd al-Gawwad Ibrahim . The author selected Taj al-Arus because of its encyclopedic breadth, its integration of earlier major lexicons such as al-Muhkam, al-Ubab, and Lisan al-Arab, and its extensive employment of Quranic readings across phonetic, morphological, and semantic levels .
The study adopts an analytical and descriptive approach to extract, categorize, and evaluate the Quranic readings cited by al-Zabidi, covering both mass-transmitted (mutawatir) and non-canonical (shadhdh) variants . For textual collation of Taj al-Arus, the author relied on the forty-volume Kuwait government edition (completed in 2001 CE under the supervision of Dahi Abd al-Baqi), alongside dedicated works on readings, exegesis, and lexicographical sources, notably the reference dictionaries of readings by Ahmad Mukhtar Umar and Abd al-Latif Muhammad al-Khatib .
Structure and Contents
The work is organized into an introduction, a preliminary overview (tamhid), three main parts (abwab), a conclusion, and three indices :
- Preliminary Overview (al-Tamhid): Covers the concept and definitions of Quranic readings, the impact of readings and Quranic reciters on Arabic linguistic studies, the concept of lexicographical craft (al-sina'a al-mu'jamiyya), and al-Zabidi's methodology in citing readings and their chains of transmission (isnad) in Taj al-Arus .
- Part One: Quranic Readings and Phonetics (al-Qira'at wa-l-Aswat): Divided into two chapters; the first discusses vocalic variation, short vowels, and the sukun, while the second examines consonants and phonetic phenomena, including assimilation (idgham), phonetic substitution (ibdal), clusters of unvocalized consonants, the glottal stop (hamz), and the pausing ha' (ha' al-sakt) .
- Part Two: Quranic Readings and Morphological Structure (al-Qira'at wa-l-Binya al-Sarfiyya): Divided into two chapters; the first explores structural changes in verbs (such as variations between active and passive voice), and the second addresses morphological variations in noun forms and derived patterns .
- Part Three: Quranic Readings and Semantics (al-Qira'at wa-l-Dalala): Divided into two chapters; the first treats Arabized loanwords (al-mu'arrab), while the second analyzes semantic shifts triggered either by phonetic alternation or by morphological change .
The book concludes with a summary of findings and three technical indices: an index of Quranic readings analyzed in the study, a bibliography of primary and secondary sources, and a subject index .
