Athar Abd al-Rahman ibn Yahya al-Muallimi al-Yamani is the multi-volume collected works of the Yemeni scholar and traditionist Abd al-Rahman ibn Yahya al-Muallimi al-Yamani (1312/1313–1386 AH / 1894/1895–1966 CE), bringing together his major published books, previously unedited treatises, and extensive marginalia across Hadith criticism, creed, jurisprudence, legal theory, Quranic exegesis, and Arabic philology .

Genesis and Editorial Project

During his lifetime, only a small fraction of al-Muallimi's writings appeared in print, including Tali'at al-Tankil, al-Anwar al-Kashifah, and Maqam Ibrahim, while the majority remained scattered in drafts and notebooks preserved in the Library of the Grand Mosque in Mecca, where he served as chief librarian . When asked why he did not publish them during his lifetime, he remarked that if there was benefit in them, God would facilitate someone to publish them later .

The initiative to systematically gather and edit his entire written corpus arose in the summer of 1418 AH during scholarly discussions in Ta'if hosted by Bakr Abu Zayd (d. 1429 AH), who regarded al-Muallimi as the "al-Dhahabi of his era" (Dhahabi al-asr) for his mastery of biographical evaluation and Hadith critique . The project took over a decade of research and preparation under the editorial leadership of Ali ibn Muhammad al-Imran, alongside a team of researchers including Muhammad Uzayr Shams, Muhammad Ajmal Ayyub al-Islahi, Nabil ibn Nassar al-Sindi, Adnan bin Safa Khan al-Bukhari, and others . The first complete edition was published in 25 volumes in 1434 AH (2013 CE) by Dar Alam al-Fawa'id .

Structure and Major Works

The collection is organized thematically into introductory studies, monographs, collected thematic treatises (majami'), and compilations:

  • Introductory Volume (Al-Madkhal): Edited and authored by Ali ibn Muhammad al-Imran, this volume contains a detailed overview of the editing project, an extensive biography of al-Muallimi, and a collection of more than seventy personal and scholarly letters exchanged between al-Muallimi and contemporary scholars and relatives .
  • Creed and Theology (al-Aqidah): Includes Tahqiq al-Kalam fi al-Masa'il al-Thalath (examining ijtihad and imitation, Sunnah and innovation, and creedal fundamentals, written during al-Muallimi's youth while traveling), Imarat al-Qubur fi al-Islam (on the building over graves), Yusr al-Aqidah al-Islamiyyah (originally drafted as Din al-Aja'iz), and Majmu' Rasa'il al-Aqidah .
  • Exegesis (Tafsir): Majmu' Rasa'il al-Tafsir, containing his analytical writings and grammatical expositions on various Quranic verses and surahs, including the Basmalah, Surah al-Fatihah, and discussions concerning Fakhr al-Din al-Razi's commentary .
  • Polemical and Critical Hadith Works: Includes Tali'at al-Tankil, Ta'ziz al-Tali'ah, and Shukr al-Tarhib (Volume 9), followed by al-Muallimi's two-volume masterwork Al-Tankil bima fi Ta'nib al-Kawthari min al-Abatil (Volumes 10–11), which critiques Muhammad Zahid al-Kawthari's assessments of transmitters and Hadith methodology . It also contains Al-Anwar al-Kashifah (Volume 12), a systematic refutation of Mahmud Abu Rayyah's skeptical claims regarding the Sunnah and Hadith narrators .
  • Biographical and Hadith Treatises: Includes Tarazim Muntakhabah min al-Tahdhib wa-al-Mizan (Volume 14) and Majmu' al-Rasa'il al-Hadithiyyah (Volume 15), comprising 14 treatises on transmitter criticism (al-Jarh wa-al-Ta'dil), such as al-Istibsar fi Naqd al-Akhbar, Ahkam al-Hadith al-Da'if, and his commentary on Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami's al-Arba'in fi al-Tasawwuf .
  • Jurisprudence and Legal Theory (al-Fiqh wa-Usuluh): Encompasses Majmu' Rasa'il al-Fiqh (Volumes 16–17) and Majmu' Rasa'il Usul al-Fiqh (Volumes 18–19), addressing contentious issues of legal deduction and jurisprudence .
  • Arabic Language and Lexicography: Features al-Muallimi's early grammatical treatises and Mu'jam al-Shawahid al-Shi'riyyah (Volume 21), a dictionary of poetic evidentiary verses compiled during his years in Hyderabad, arranged by meter and rhyme scheme to facilitate navigation through classical poetic commentaries .
  • Notebooks and Miscellanies (Fawa'id al-Majami'): Spanning Volumes 23–24, this section extracts observations, critical comments, textual corrections, poetry, and research notes recorded across five decades of travel through Yemen, Asir, Indonesia, India, and Mecca .
  • Editorial Introductions (Muqaddimat al-Mu'allimi): Volume 25 compiles al-Muallimi's scholarly forewords and editorial notes written during his career at the Da'irat al-Ma'arif al-Uthmaniyyah in Hyderabad and later, introducing classical references such as Ibn Makula's al-Ikmal, al-Sam'ani's al-Ansab, Ibn Abi Hatim's al-Jarh wa-al-Ta'dil, and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi's al-Mawdih li-Awham al-Jam' wa-al-Tafriq .

Method of Editing

The editorial team relied directly on al-Muallimi's holographic drafts (musawwadat), fair copies (mubayyadat), and uncataloged archival sheets preserved at the Library of the Grand Mosque in Mecca . The editors transcribed each text, checked it against relevant manuscript copies, verified Quranic citations, documented Hadith references against primary sources, and supplied introductory studies and analytical indexes for every individual title .
