Asna al-Matalib fi Ahadith Mukhtalifat al-Maratib (The Loftiest Objectives Concerning Hadiths of Differing Ranks) is a hadith reference work authored by the Beiruti scholar Muhammad ibn Darwish al-Hut (d. 1276 AH / 1859–1860 CE; another report gives 1277 AH / 1860–1861 CE), evaluating the status and authenticity of circulating and widely quoted traditions .

Composition and Structure

The work belongs to the genre of compilations devoted to examining common traditions circulating among the people (al-aḥādīth al-mushtahirah). Al-Hut extracted the narrations that Ibn al-Dayba' had abridged from al-Sakhawi’s al-Maqasid al-Hasana (The Good Intentions) and incorporated his own additions and commentary into the text .

The author’s original text opened with the praise of God: «الحمد لله الذي رفع مراتب أهل السنة والحديث ونشر ذكرهم الجميل في القديم والحديث» ("Praise be to God who elevated the ranks of the people of the Sunnah and Hadith and diffused their noble remembrance in ancient and modern times") . Following al-Hut's death, his son, Abu Zayd Abd al-Rahman al-Hut, finalized the book by merging his father's supplementary material into the main work and arranging all the hadith entries alphabetically by their opening words to facilitate reference .

Publication History

The work was first published in Beirut . Modern editions include a 1412 AH (1992 CE) printing by Dar al-Fikr in Beirut and a 1418 AH (1997/1998 CE) edition edited by Mustafa 'Abd al-Qadir 'Ata and published by Dar al-Kutub al-'Ilmiyya .
