Asl al-Zarari Sharh Sahih al-Bukhari (Arabic: أصل الزراري شرح صحيح البخاري) is a commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari authored by the Damascene Hanafi scholar Abd al-Qadir al-Astuwani (1249–1314 AH / 1833–1896 CE) .
Composition and Purpose
Al-Astuwani commenced writing the commentary on the 1st of Shawwal 1276 AH (1860 CE) . In his preface, he notes that having read Sahih al-Bukhari under his teachers and consulted its major commentaries, he found some excessively lengthy and cumbersome while others were overly brief and deficient . Consequently, prompted by the insistence of close peers, he composed the work to compile and synthesize the oral explanations and determinations (taqarir) delivered by his teachers .
Structure and Content
The commentary opens with an introductory section divided into several chapters (fusul) :
- Hadith Terminology: A survey defining fundamental hadith classifications, including mutawatir, mashhur, sahih, hasan, mursal, da'if, mu'an'an, mudallas, and mawdu', accompanied by an exposition on the prerequisites and trials associated with becoming a qualified hadith scholar (muhaddith) .
- Evaluation of Sahih al-Bukhari: A discussion of the consensus regarding the authenticity of the two Sahih compilations, addressing scholarly arguments preferring Sahih al-Bukhari over Sahih Muslim as detailed by Badr al-Din al-Ayni .
- Biography of al-Bukhari: An outline of Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Bukhari's lineage, his birth in 194 AH in Bukhara, and a listing of his works .
- Survey of Previous Commentaries: An overview of classical commentaries on the Sahih, including works by Abu Sulayman al-Khattabi, Ibn Battal, Shams al-Din al-Kirmani, Shams al-Din al-Birmawi, and Burhan al-Din al-Halabi, where al-Astuwani defends earlier commentators such as Ibn Battal and al-Kirmani against criticisms leveled by Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Qastallani and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani .
Manuscript and Edition
The manuscript consists of 375 folios . A digital edition was prepared by Dar al-Kamal al-Muttahidah and published under the auspices of 'Ata'at al-'Ilm within its Sahih al-Bukhari Encyclopedia (Bukhari-pedia), typeset and collated under the supervision of Muhammad Tahir Sha'ban .
