Ashara Ahadith min al-Juz al-Muntaqa al-Awwal wa al-Thani min Hadith al-Layth (Arabic: عشرة أحاديث من الجزء المنتقى الأول والثاني من حديث الليث, lit. 'Ten Hadiths from the Selected First and Second Parts from the Hadith of al-Layth') is a concise hadith tract containing ten narrations transmitted from the Egyptian scholar al-Layth ibn Sa'd (d. 175 AH / 791 CE) .

Transmission and Content

The collection represents an abridged selection (muntaqā) of ten narrations preserved within the transmission records of classical hadith scholars . In his bibliographic work al-Mu‘jam al-Mufahras, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani recorded reading this ten-hadith selection before ‘Abd Allah ibn Khalil al-Harastani, who transmitted it through his hearing from Zaynab bint al-Kamal by way of authorization (ijāzah) from Ahmad ibn al-Mufarraj .

Ibn Hajar enumerated the contents of the ten traditions in the selection as follows:

  • The hadith of Abu Hurayrah
  • The hadith of Mas‘ud ibn al-Hakam from his mother
  • The hadith concerning the mosque founded on piety (al-masjid alladhī ussisa ‘alā al-taqwā)
  • The hadith of Ibn Mas‘ud regarding fasting on the day of ‘Ashura’
  • The hadith of Abu Sa‘id from an unnamed man
  • The hadith of Umm Salamah regarding waking up in a state of major ritual impurity while fasting (aṣbaḥa junuban)
  • The hadith of ‘A’ishah on fulfilling fasting on behalf of the deceased (man māta wa-‘alayhi ṣiyām)
  • The hadith addressing Abu Bakr regarding the timing of the witr prayer (matā tūtir)
  • The hadith concerning supplications for times of distress (da‘awāt al-karb)
  • The hadith of Sa‘id ibn ‘Amr from his father .

Publication

The tract was edited by Khalaf Mahmud ‘Abd al-Sami‘ and published in Beirut by Dar al-Kutub al-‘Ilmiyyah in 1423 AH / 2002 CE . It was printed as part of a multi-tract manuscript codex from Dar al-Kutub al-Misriyyah released under the collective title al-Fawa'id li-Ibn Mandah .
