Ash'ar al-Nisa' ("Poetry of Women") is an Arabic biographical and anthological work compiled by the literary historian and traditionist al-Marzubani (297–384 AH / 910–994 CE; another report gives his birth year as 287 AH), dedicated to collecting and recording verse composed by women .

Scope and Content

The work was conceived as an independent collection devoted entirely to female poets, comprising approximately six hundred folios . While earlier literary compilers had occasionally documented female eloquence—most notably Ibn Tayfur in his compilation Balaghat al-Nisa'—Ibn Tayfur gathered both prose and poetry, whereas al-Marzubani specialized his book specifically in the poetic output of women rather than their prose .

Transmission and Modern Publication

Portions of the text were preserved in manuscript form, including the third part of the work . Ash'ar al-Nisa' was later edited by Sami Makki al-Ani and Hilal Naji and published in Baghdad in 1976 .
