Arbaun Hadithan min Musnad Burayd li al-Daraqutni (Forty Hadiths from the Musnad of Burayd by al-Daraqutni) is a specialized hadith monograph compiled by the Baghdadi hadith scholar Abu al-Hasan al-Daraqutni (306–385 AH / 918–995 CE) . The collection gathers forty narrations centered on a single familial chain of transmission .

Scope and Structure

The work belongs to the forty-hadith (al-arba‘iniyyat) and topical monograph (al-ajza’ al-hadithiyyah) genres. Its specific focus is transmitting forty traditions narrated through Burayd ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Abi Burdah from his grandfather Abu Burdah from the Companion Abu Musa al-Ash'ari .

The collection compiles narrations across diverse legal and theological topics, concluding with the thirty-ninth hadith on ransom from the Fire and the fortieth hadith citing the Prophet ﷺ: كُلُّكُمْ رَاعٍ وَكُلُّكُمْ مسؤول عَنْ رَعِيَّتِهِ ("Each of you is a shepherd, and each of you is responsible for his flock") .

Transmission and Manuscripts

The primary transmission route of the text from al-Daraqutni runs through al-Sharif Abu al-Ghana’im ‘Abd al-Samad ibn ‘Ali ibn al-Ma’mun, and subsequently through scholars such as Yahya ibn ‘Ali ibn al-Tarrah and Abu Mansur al-Qazzaz . Later scholars recorded hearing and receiving licenses (ijazah) for the work, including Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in his catalog . A historical copy of the collection was transcribed by Yunus ibn Mallah al-Hasani al-Hanafi .

A manuscript of the work is preserved in Istanbul at the Şehid Ali Paşa Library (MS 541, fols. 136a–174a) .

The work was edited by Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Karim ‘Ubayd and published in a single volume by Umm al-Qura University in Makkah in 1420 AH (1999–2000 CE) .
