Aqidat al-Muslim fi Daw al-Kitab wa al-Sunna (The Muslim's Creed in the Light of the Quran and the Sunnah) is a two-volume work on Islamic theology by the Saudi scholar Saeed bin Wahf al-Qahtani (d. 1440 AH / 2018 CE), addressing the core tenets of faith, their requirements, and matters that negate or diminish them.
Composition and Purpose
The author completed the compilation on the morning of Monday, 18 Safar 1429 AH. The work was formed by assembling fourteen separate, previously published treatises on creed into a unified compendium. The author defined the purpose of the collection as clarifying what a Muslim requires regarding correct creed, outlining what strengthens faith and deepens its firmness, and explaining beliefs and actions that contradict, nullify, or weaken it, pairing every discussion with proofs from the Quran and the Sunnah.
Structure and Contents
The book is organized into fourteen distinct treatises (rasa'il):
- al-Urwa al-Wuthqa: Shahadat an La Ilaha Illa Allah wa-Anna Muhammadan Rasul Allah (on the testimony of faith, its meaning, merits, pillars, conditions, and nullifiers).
- Bayan Aqidat Ahl al-Sunna wa-al-Jama'a wa-Luzum Ittiba'iha (on the creed of Ahl al-Sunna and the necessity of adhering to it).
- I'tiqad al-Firqa al-Najiya fi al-Iman wa-Asma' Allah wa-Sifatih (a simplified commentary on al-Aqida al-Wasitiyya).
- Sharh Asma' Allah al-Husna (an explanation of the Divine Names).
- al-Fawz al-Azim wa-al-Khusran al-Mubin (on ultimate success and ultimate loss).
- al-Nur wa-al-Zulumat fi al-Kitab wa-al-Sunna (on light and darkness in revelation).
- Nur al-Tawhid wa-Zulumat al-Shirk (on the light of monotheism and the darkness of polytheism).
- Nur al-Ikhlas wa-Zulumat Iradat al-Dunya bi-Amal al-Akhira (on sincerity versus seeking worldly ends through righteous deeds).
- Nur al-Islam wa-Zulumat al-Kufr (on Islam and disbelief).
- Nur al-Iman wa-Zulumat al-Nifaq (on faith and hypocrisy).
- Nur al-Sunna wa-Zulumat al-Bid'a (on the Prophetic Sunnah and religious innovation).
- Qadiyyat al-Takfir bayn Ahl al-Sunna wa-Firaq al-Dalal (the issue of declaring disbelief between Ahl al-Sunna and divergent groups).
- Tabrid Hararat al-Musiba (on easing the pain of afflictions).
- al-I'tisam bi-al-Kitab wa-al-Sunna (on holding fast to the Quran and the Sunnah).
Sources and Methodology
In compiling and verifying the material, the author drew heavily from the teachings and legal preferences of his teacher, Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd Allah ibn Baz. He also cited earlier classical and modern scholars, including Ibn Taymiyya, Ibn al-Qayyim, Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Sa'di, and Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin, while relying on the hadith evaluations of Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani for authenticating Prophetic traditions.
