Anwar al-Hilalayn fi al-Ta‘qubat ‘ala al-Jalalayn (The Lights of the Two Crescents: Critical Annotations on the Jalalayn) is a critical treatise written by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Khamis examining textual and creedal issues in Tafsir al-Jalalayn.
Scope and Content
The work was composed as a concise booklet compiling and illustrating specific interpretive shortcomings and critical notes on the classical Quranic commentary Tafsir al-Jalalayn, authored jointly by Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli and Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti.
The author primarily focuses on three categories of critical observations:
- Theological Issues: Critical remarks on creedal slips, specifically where the authors of al-Jalalayn engaged in figurative interpretation (ta’wil) of the verses concerning divine attributes (ayat al-sifat) according to Ash‘ari theological methods rather than affirming them upon their apparent meanings.
- Semantic Narrowing: Instances where the exegetes restricted general phrasing (al-‘amm) to only some of its individual instances (ba‘d afradih); such restriction leaves out other valid, intended meanings that are encompassed within the broader Quranic wording.
- Biblical and Historical Narratives: Observations concerning the inclusion of unauthenticated Israelite traditions (Isra'iliyyat) within the exegesis.
Publication
The treatise has been published in print by Dar al-Sumay‘i.
