Amali Ibn Mandah – Riwayat al-Bazzani (Dictations of Ibn Mandah – Transmission of al-Bazzani) is a short hadith tract preserving a dictation session (majlis) delivered by the Isfahani hadith scholar Ibn Mandah (d. 395 AH / 1004–1005 CE) .
Transmission and Context
The text represents an individual dictation session transcribed directly from Ibn Mandah's dictation circle by his student Abu al-Fadl al-Mutahhar ibn Abd al-Wahid ibn Muhammad al-Bazzani (d. 474 AH) . The transmission chain recorded at the beginning of the text indicates that it was subsequently read in Isfahan in the year 561 AH to Abu al-Faraj Mas'ud ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Qasim al-Thaqafi al-Isfahani, who related it on the authority of al-Bazzani from Ibn Mandah . Al-Bazzani's transmission of Ibn Mandah's dictation sessions was widely studied and heard by later scholars and traditionists in Isfahan, including Abu Ahmad Ghanim ibn Abi Najih al-Khayyat and Abd al-Mughith ibn Muhammad al-Abdi, as well as family members such as his granddaughter Ayn al-Shams bint al-Mufaddal .
Contents and Subjects
The session comprises twenty-two numbered narrations, consisting of prophetic hadiths with their full chains of transmission (isnad) alongside occasional historical reports and ascetic sayings . The reports touch upon various religious and ethical topics, including:
- Worship and Invocations: Traditions encouraging remembrance (dhikr) following mandatory prayers and before sleep, fasting the first three days of each lunar month, and reciting the tashahhud .
- Virtues of Deeds and Figures: Narrations on the excellence of righteous deeds during the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah, the elevated rank of Abu Bakr and Umar among the people of Paradise, and the standing of Ali ibn Abi Talib .
- Prophetic Conduct and Precepts: Reports detailing Anas ibn Malik serving the Prophet ﷺ, the prohibition against appointing individuals who actively seek administrative office, the removal of images and idols prior to entering the Kaaba, and God's retribution against oppressors .
- Eschatology and Destiny: Hadiths addressing predestined decree, salvation on the Day of Resurrection, and admonitions regarding worldly trials .
Manuscripts
A primary manuscript copy of this transmission survives in the al-Zahiriyya Library in Damascus within the Majami' al-Umariyya collection (Majmu' 56, manuscript no. 9, folios 177b–181a) .
