Amali al-Muhamili Riwayat Ibn al-Salt (Dictations of al-Mahamili: The Recension of Ibn al-Salt) is a collection of hadith dictations by the Baghdadi jurist and hadith master al-Mahamili (235–330 AH / 849–941 CE), transmitted through his student Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Musa ibn al-Salt al-Mujabbir (317–405 AH / 929–1014 CE) .
Author and Dictation Context
The author, Abu Abd Allah al-Husayn ibn Isma'il ibn Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Dabbi al-Mahamili, began studying hadith at the age of ten in 244 AH and served as a judge in Kufa for sixty years, as well as over Fars, before retiring from the judiciary . In 270 AH he established regular learning assemblies at his residence, and his public dictation gatherings in Baghdad grew exceptionally large, reportedly attended by up to ten thousand listeners . Al-Mahamili continued holding dictation sessions until the end of his life; his final dictation session took place on 12 Rabi' al-Akhir 330 AH, and he died eleven days later .
Transmission and Recension
Al-Mahamili's dictations were transmitted by several notable students, resulting in distinct textual recensions (riwayat), including those of Ibn al-Salt al-Mujabbir, Ibn Mahdi al-Farisi (d. 416 AH), and Ibn Yahya al-Bayyi' .
The transmitter of this specific recension, Abu al-Hasan Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Musa ibn al-Qasim ibn al-Salt al-Mujabbir al-Qurashi, was born in 317 AH and studied under al-Mahamili, Ibrahim ibn Abd al-Samad al-Hashimi, Abu Bakr ibn al-Anbari, and Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Suli . Among those who transmitted from Ibn al-Salt were Abu al-Qasim al-Azhari, Hamza ibn Muhammad al-Daqqaq, and Malik ibn Ahmad al-Baniyasi . Scholarly assessments of Ibn al-Salt varied: al-Barqani declared him weak, whereas Hamza ibn Muhammad characterized him as religious and righteous, and the hadith scholar Abu Dharr al-Harawi stated that there was no fault in transmitting from him when he related directly from his original written manuscripts . Ibn al-Salt died in Rajab 405 AH .
