Amal al-Yawm wa al-Layla (The Actions of Day and Night) is a hadith collection compiled by the hadith scholar Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Nasai (215–303 AH / 829–915 CE), dedicated to the prophetic supplications, invocations, and practices observed throughout the day and night .

Scope and Content

The work was composed as a comprehensive compilation of the remembrance formulas (adhkar), invocations (awrad), and supplications (du'a) transmitted from the Prophet ﷺ for various states and daily circumstances . It addresses specific occasions across daily human life, such as prayer, entering mosques, ablution, sleep and waking, commercial transactions, visiting the sick, encountering blessings or distress, confronting adversaries, and other verbal and practical prophetic traditions . Al-Nasai is considered among the earliest scholars to have authored a dedicated work under this specific title and subject .

Method and Transmission

In structuring the book, al-Nasai transmitted the reports with continuous chains of narration (asanid) and documented multiple transmission paths (turuq) for the hadiths . His student, Abu Bakr Ibn al-Sunni, who narrated from him extensively, later authored his own work of the same title, likely taking the nomenclature from his teacher .

Reception and Editions

Scholars of hadith and devotional literature have cited the work as a foundational source for prophetic invocations. Al-Nawawi praised the collection as one of the finest books compiled on the actions of day and night containing connected transmission chains . Among its modern critical editions is the one edited by Faruq Hammadah, published in Rabat in 1401 AH (1981 CE) .
