al-Zuhd wa al-Wara wa al-Ibada (Asceticism, Scrupulousness, and Worship) is a treatise by the Hanbali jurist and theologian Ibn Taymiyya (661–728 AH / 1263–1328 CE) that outlines the orthodox Islamic framework for asceticism (zuhd), scrupulous piety (wara'), and devotion ('ibada) grounded in the Sunnah .
Subject and Core Themes
The work focuses on defining the straight path (al-sirat al-mustaqim) in matters of asceticism, worship, and scrupulousness, with an emphasis on refraining from prohibited acts and unlawful desires while maintaining moderation in worship (al-iqtisad fi al-'ibada) . Ibn Taymiyya argues that steadfast adherence to the prophetic Sunnah is sufficient to protect a believer from the evil of the soul and Satan without the need for innovated spiritual paths (al-turuq al-mubtada'a), which he describes as burdening their practitioners with arbitrary restrictions and self-delusion .
A central objective of the treatise is distinguishing legally sanctioned asceticism (al-zuhd al-shar'i al-mahmud) from blameworthy neglect, noting that genuine asceticism is frequently confused with laziness, incapacity, or the abandonment of religious duties . Similarly, it differentiates between praiseworthy desire for the Hereafter and blameworthy worldly greed (al-hirs wa al-tama') . Ibn Taymiyya characterizes wara' as the active avoidance and inner detestation of actions that carry spiritual peril, and discusses the virtue of exercising patience (sabr) against temptations and unlawful desires, particularly when one possesses the power and opportunity to commit them .
Distinction Between Zuhd and Wara'
In his treatment of the subject, Ibn Taymiyya defines asceticism (zuhd) as "abandoning that which does not benefit in the Hereafter" and scrupulousness (wara') as "abandoning that which one fears may harm in the Hereafter" . His student Ibn al-Qayyim cited this formulation, remarking that it is among the finest and most comprehensive statements ever made regarding the definitions of asceticism and scrupulousness .
Transmission and Editions
The text is preserved within Ibn Taymiyya's broader compendium Majmu' al-Fatawa under the chapter title Fasl fi al-Sirat al-Mustaqim fi al-Zuhd wa al-'Ibada wa al-Wara' wa al-Iqtisad fi al-'Ibada . It was also published as an independent volume edited by Hammad Salama and Muhammad 'Uwayda, issued by Maktabat al-Manar in Jordan in 1407 AH / 1987 CE .
