al-Zuhd li-Ibn Abi Asim (The Book of Asceticism by Ibn Abi Asim) is a 3rd-century AH collection of traditions compiled by the hadith scholar Ibn Abi Asim (206–287 AH / 822–900 CE), focused on Islamic renunciation, pious reflection, and ethical detachment from worldly enticements .
Subject and Scope
The work is part of the early genre of zuhd literature dedicated to heart-softening narrations (raqaʾiq), moral rectitude, and the spiritual prioritization of the afterlife over material pursuits . Its contents comprise prophetic hadiths as well as sayings and reports from the Companions and early Muslim figures . Among the recurring subjects treated through its narrations are:
- The dispraise of worldly preoccupation and the fleeting nature of earthly life, such as traditions comparing one's stay in the world to a traveler resting briefly under the shade of a tree .
- Prophetic warnings concerning the opening of worldly wealth and its potential to cause hearts to stray .
- The low status of the material world in the sight of God .
- Disciplining speech and guarding the tongue, including early reports emphasizing restraint in conversation .
Method
Ibn Abi Asim structured the work according to the standard method of early traditionists, recording reports with their complete chains of transmission (asanid) organized by thematic chapters and topical headings that reflect the intended moral and devotional teachings of the text .
Reception and Editions
The text is frequently cited by hadith scholars and commentators alongside other foundational works of the same genre, such as the Kitab al-Zuhd compilations of Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak, Waki ibn al-Jarrah, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Hannad ibn al-Sari, Abu Dawud al-Sijistani, and al-Bayhaqi's al-Zuhd al-Kabir .
