Kitab al-Zuhd (The Book of Asceticism) is a compilation of ascetic reports, moral exhortations, and sayings of early Islamic figures compiled with chains of transmission by the Baghdadi scholar Abu Bakr Ibn Abi al-Dunya (208–281 AH / 823–894 CE) .
Subject and Method
The work belongs to the early genre of zuhd (asceticism and renunciation) and raqaʾiq (heart-softening traditions) . Ibn Abi al-Dunya composed extensively on themes of renunciation and piety; Ibn al-Jawzi noted in al-Muntazam that he produced over one hundred monographs dedicated to topics of asceticism .
In Kitab al-Zuhd, Ibn Abi al-Dunya systematically documents reports with their supporting chains of transmission (isnad) . The material comprises prophetic traditions, statements from the Companions and Successors, and aphorisms from early ascetics and scholars concerning the definition and spiritual reality of renunciation, contentment, and the disparagement of worldly distraction. Among the figures cited through his transmissions are al-Hasan al-Basri, Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, Dawud al-Ta'i, Ibrahim ibn Adham, Fudayl ibn 'Iyad, and Ibn al-Sammak .
Transmission and Scholarly Reception
Traditions from Ibn Abi al-Dunya's ascetic treatises were transmitted and quoted by later compilers of zuhd literature, including Abu Sa'id Ibn al-A'rabi in al-Zuhd wa-Sifat al-Zahidin and Abu Bakr al-Bayhaqi in al-Zuhd al-Kabir .
Scholars have noted that while Ibn Abi al-Dunya's compilations contain many weak narrations, they remain indispensable for documenting the statements and historical practices of the Companions and early generations because he recorded them with full chains of transmission . His works were widely collected by later traditionists; when al-Khatib al-Baghdadi traveled from Baghdad to Damascus, he carried approximately forty of Ibn Abi al-Dunya's individual titles among his essential baggage, and later authors such as Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali frequently cited them .
