al-Zuhd (الزهد, The Book of Asceticism) is a hadith and narration collection on asceticism and piety by the Kufan hadith scholar and ascetic Hannad ibn al-Sari (152–243 AH / 769–857 CE) .

Subject Matter and Content

The work is characterized as a large compilation (musannaf kabir) dedicated to asceticism (zuhd) and related spiritual and moral themes . It gathers prophetic hadiths as well as reports from the Companions and early generations regarding detachment from worldly pursuits, the conditions of the grave, eschatology, the punishment of the Hellfire, and the descriptions of Paradise . Among the prominent teachers through whom Hannad narrates in the text are Abu Mu'awiyah (Muhammad ibn Khazim) and Waki' ibn al-Jarrah .

Transmission and Reception

The text was transmitted directly from Hannad by his student Muhammad ibn Salih ibn Dhurayh al-'Ukbari, through whom later continuous chains of narration passed, including transmitters such as Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bakhit and Ibrahim ibn 'Umar al-Barmaki .

The collection holds significant prominence among classical hadith compendia of the ascetic genre . Abu 'Isa al-Tirmidhi narrated extensively from Hannad in his Jami', drawing especially from his Kitab al-Zuhd . It is also cited and utilized for hadith comparison and verification by authors such as Ibn Abi Shaybah, Ibn Jarir al-Tabari, Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani, and Abu Muhammad 'Abd al-Haqq al-Ishbili .
