Kitab al-Zuhd (Arabic: كتاب الزهد, lit. 'The Book of Asceticism') is an early compilation of hadith and pious reports on renunciation and devotion by the Umayyad traditionist Asad ibn Musa (132–212 AH / 750–828 CE), known as Asad al-Sunnah .

Title and Contents

In early bibliographical literature, the work is also recorded under the fuller title Kitab al-Zuhd wa-l-Ibadah wa-l-Wara' (كتاب الزهد والعبادة والورع; 'The Book of Asceticism, Worship, and Scrupulous Piety') . The book gathers narrations transmitted by Asad ibn Musa containing prophetic traditions, reports from the Companions, and ascetic exhortations regarding worldly detachment, moral discipline, and piety . Al-Dhahabi noted Kitab al-Zuhd among the surviving works of Asad ibn Musa that reached later scholars .

Transmission and Reception

The primary transmitter of the work from Asad ibn Musa was his Egyptian student Abu Yazid Yusuf ibn Yazid al-Qaratisi (d. 287 AH), while portions were also transmitted through Abu al-Fath Nasr ibn Marzuq . From al-Qaratisi, the book was related by notable traditionists, including al-Tabarani, Abd Allah ibn Ja'far ibn al-Ward, and Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Razi .

The transmission chains of the work were documented across major Andalusian and eastern bibliographical and hadith indexes (faharis and thabat literature):

  • Ibn Khayr al-Ishbili documented Andalusian chains connecting to the book through Abu Umar Ibn Abd al-Barr and Muhammad ibn Ittab, going back via al-Qaratisi and Nasr ibn Marzuq to Asad ibn Musa .
  • Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani recorded his continuous isnad for Kitab al-Zuhd in al-Mu'jam al-Mufahras, tracing back through Ishaq ibn Yahya al-Amidi, Yusuf ibn Khalil, Ibn Fazshah, and al-Tabarani from al-Qaratisi from Asad ibn Musa .
  • Al-Suyuti listed the book in Anshab al-Kuthub, tracing its transmission through Fakhr al-Din Ibn al-Bukhari and al-Tabarani to al-Qaratisi and Asad ibn Musa .
  • Al-Rudani preserved an isnad in Silat al-Khalaf via Izz al-Din ibn Jama'ah and Diya' al-Din al-Maqdisi back to al-Tabarani's transmission of the text .
