al-Zuhd (Kitāb al-Zuhd, "The Book of Asceticism") is a 3rd-century AH compilation of traditions on asceticism and piety by the hadith master Abu Hatim al-Razi (195–277 AH / 811–890 CE) .

Context and Content

The work belongs to the early hadith-based genre of zuhd (renunciation and spiritual vigilance), assembling transmitted reports and sayings of the Prophet ﷺ, the Companions, and early figures of the pious predecessors (al-salaf), such as al-Hasan al-Basri, on themes of world-renunciation, moral exhortation, and spiritual discipline . Scholars cite it alongside other major 3rd-century treatises on asceticism, including those compiled by Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak, Waki ibn al-Jarrah, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Hannad ibn al-Sari, Ibn Abi al-Dunya, and Ibn Abi Asim . A work bearing the same title is also recorded among the writings of his son, Ibn Abi Hatim (d. 327 AH / 938 CE) .

The text was edited by Mundhir Salim Mahmud al-Dumi and published by Dar Atlas in Riyadh in 1421 AH (2000 CE) .
