al-Ziyadat ala Kitab al-Kabair lil-Bardiji ("Additions to al-Bardiji's Book of Major Sins") is a hadith supplement compiled by the traditionist Diya al-Din al-Maqdisi (567/569–643 AH / 1171/1173–1245 CE) to augment the early monograph on major sins by Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Harun al-Bardiji (d. 301 AH) .
Background and Content
The original work by al-Bardiji—variously titled in manuscripts and transmission certificates as Juzʾ fihi man rawa ʿan al-Nabi min al-sahaba fi al-kabair, Turuq ahadith al-kabair, or Ma ruwiya fi al-kabair—is a concise compilation dedicated to hadiths concerning the major sins (al-kabaʾir) . In that base text, al-Bardiji recorded narrations transmitted through eleven Companions from the Prophet ﷺ, encompassing eleven hadiths in total .
Diya al-Din al-Maqdisi compiled his additions (al-ziyadat) as marginal notes and supplementary narrations on al-Bardiji's text, expanding upon its transmitted routes and traditions .
Transmission and Publication
The manuscript bearing the work features numerous historical audition certificates (samaʿat), documenting readings by prominent scholars including Diya al-Din al-Maqdisi and Ibn Abd al-Hadi . A specific transmission note records that Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Ghani al-Maqdisi read the entire text of al-Bardiji's book along with the additions in its margins (al-lathi fi hawashih) before Diya al-Din al-Maqdisi in Muharram 637 AH .
The additions were edited by Muhammad ibn Turki al-Turki from manuscript and published alongside al-Bardiji's original treatise by Dar Atlas (Dar Atlas al-Khadraʾ) in Riyadh (1426 AH / 2005 CE) .
