al-Tiraz al-Marqum bi-Sharh al-Durr al-Manzum (The Embroidered Pattern: Commentary on The Versified Pearls) is a Shafi'i legal treatise written by the Egyptian scholar Sulayman al-Jamzuri (d. after 1209 AH / 1794 CE) as an explanatory commentary on his own poetic text, al-Durr al-Manzum fi 'Udhr al-Ma'mum . The work examines the jurisprudence of congregational prayer according to the Shafi'i school, focusing specifically on rulings concerning the excused follower (al-ma'mum al-ma'dhur) and the latecomer (al-masbuq) .
Background and Content
Al-Jamzuri composed the base didactic poem, al-Durr al-Manzum, to synthesize legal cases involving followers in congregational prayer who face valid excuses or impediments during prayer . In the introduction to al-Tiraz al-Marqum, he notes having recited his versification directly to his teacher, Shaykh Nur al-Din Ali al-Mihi (d. 1204 AH / 1790 CE) .
In elucidating the rulings of the poem, al-Jamzuri draws heavily upon late Shafi'i juristic authorities, quoting the positions of figures such as Nur al-Din al-Shabramallisi (d. 1087 AH / 1677 CE), Shams al-Din al-Barmawi (d. 1106 AH / 1695 CE), and Sulayman al-Jamal (d. 1204 AH / 1790 CE) . The text contains very few prophetic traditions, relying instead on legal extrapolation; only a single hadith is cited according to its general meaning found in the two Sahihs . The treatise also reflects the author's Sufi affiliation with the Shadhili order in his supplications .
Manuscript Tradition and Identification
A manuscript copy preserved in the al-Azhar Library (MS Ambabi 48382, within a composite volume copied up to 1283 AH / 1866 CE, folios 183–206) was mistakenly cataloged under the title Risala fi Masa'il al-Ma'mum wa-al-Masbuq and attributed to the earlier scholar Ali ibn Abd Allah al-Samhudi (d. 911 AH / 1506 CE) . Modern editorial scrutiny refuted this attribution, establishing that the author cited jurists from the eleventh and twelfth centuries AH and referenced his contemporary master al-Mihi, confirming the treatise as al-Jamzuri's al-Tiraz al-Marqum . Other manuscript copies correctly titled al-Tiraz al-Marqum bi-Sharh al-Durr al-Manzum are preserved in the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies in Riyadh . The work has been edited and published by Baha' Anwar and Abu al-Mundhir al-Minyawi .
