al-Tibyan fi Takhrij wa Tabwib Ahadith Bulugh al-Maram (Clarification in the Sourcing and Chaptering of the Hadiths of Bulugh al-Maram) is a multi-volume Hadith study by the contemporary scholar Khalid bin Dayf Allah al-Shalahi, providing detailed documentation (takhrij), legal sub-categorization (tabwib), and supplementary narrations for the hadiths of Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani’s legal Hadith collection Bulugh al-Maram .
Composition and Purpose
The full title of the work is al-Tibyan fi Takhrij wa Tabwib Ahadith Bulugh al-Maram wa Bayan Ma Warada fi al-Bab . Al-Shalahi began working on the project in 1410 AH after hearing Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz advise scholars and students to devote scholarly attention to Bulugh al-Maram . He finished the first part of the study—the section covering acts of worship (ibadat)—in Ramadan 1420 AH .
Methodology and Structure
Al-Shalahi structured his work around two principal objectives:
- Thematic Sub-categorization (tabwib): Recognizing that Ibn Hajar had grouped narrations under general chapter titles, al-Shalahi placed specific headings for each individual issue on a separate page to clarify the legal intent . When a hadith could fit multiple topics, he either noted its earlier occurrence, adopted the chapter arrangement of the Six Books of Hadith, or consulted commentaries such as Muhammad bin Ismail al-San'ani's Subul al-Salam . Following each chapter, he listed up to seven additional well-known narrations on the topic (ma warada fi al-bab) to provide comprehensive coverage without excessive length .
- Hadith Documentation and Critical Evaluation (takhrij): Al-Shalahi sourced each hadith to its primary collections, outlined variations across chains of transmission (turuq), and cited evaluations by early Hadith critics rather than relying on modern independent re-evaluations . His primary references included works of defect analysis (ilal) and questioning (su'alat) by scholars such as Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Yahya ibn Ma'in, Ali ibn al-Madini, Abu Hatim al-Razi, and al-Daraqutni, as well as classical compendia by Ibn Rajab and modern works by Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani . In evaluating narrator concealment (tadlis) and additions by reliable transmitters (ziyadat al-thiqah), he relied on contextual indicators (qara'in) rather than rigid mechanical rules .
While the worship section was treated extensively across eight volumes, al-Shalahi condensed his method in the remaining parts of Bulugh al-Maram, citing supplementary narrations on the topic only when necessary .
Publication and Abridgment
The complete work was published by Mu'assasat al-Risalah al-Alamiyyah in Beirut in twelve volumes, the twelfth being an index volume . Another edition was published in eight volumes .
Al-Shalahi later prepared a concise abridgment of the work titled Khulasat al-Kalam fi Takhrij Ahadith Bulugh al-Maram .
