al-Thani min Shi‘ar al-Abrar fi al-Ad‘iya wal-Adhkar (Arabic: الثاني من شعار الأبرار في الأدعية والأذكار, lit. 'The Second Part of The Emblem of the Pious on Supplications and Remembrances') is a hadith tract (juz’) compiled from the narrations of Abu al-Faraj Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Shaykha (d. 799 AH / 1397 CE) and arranged (takhrij) by the hadith scholar Abu al-Safa' Khalil ibn Muhammad al-Aqfahasi .
Transmission and Structure
The tract represents the second installment of a larger collection devoted to prophetic prayers and invocations. It is transmitted on the authority of Ibn al-Shaykha through transmitters including Umm al-Fadl Hajar bint Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr ibn Abd al-Aziz al-Qudsi and Abu al-Mahasin Yusuf ibn Sahir ibn Sinan ibn Umar . The text preserves hearing and reading records (sama‘ and qira’ah) by students and scholars across various regional centers, such as Cairo and Baghdad, with auditions dating through the 8th century AH, including sessions held in the year 738 AH .
Content and Methodology
The work collects traditions on the prescribed words of remembrance (adhkar) and supplication (du‘a’) in the daily life of a Muslim, accompanied by full chains of transmission (asānīd) and critical hadith commentary . Key subjects and narrations include:
- Morning and evening remembrances: Including the report of Abu Hurayrah on reciting the declaration of divine unity ten times after the morning prayer and in the evening to attain divine reward and protection from Satan , and the comprehensive tasbīḥ taught to Juwayriyah: سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ عَدَدَ خَلْقِهِ، سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ رِضَا نَفْسِهِ، سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ زِنَةَ عَرْشِهِ، سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ مِدَادَ كَلِمَاتِهِ ("Glory be to Allah according to the number of His creation, the pleasure of His soul, the weight of His Throne, and the ink of His words") .
- Invocations after ritual prayers: Such as the Prophet's ﷺ exhortation to Mu'adh ibn Jabal to never omit saying after every prayer: اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكِ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكِ ("O Allah, help me to remember You, give thanks to You, and worship You well") , as well as the traditions of Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas and Ka'b ibn Ujrah concerning the specific counts of tasbīḥ, taḥmīd, and takbīr recited after prayers and before sleeping .
- Supplications related to dining: Such as the narration of Abu Umamah detailing the invocation uttered upon the removal of a meal table .
The compiler cross-references each narration against major canonical collections, including Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and the Sunan works of Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i . In doing so, the compiler highlights isnad metrics such as elevated transmissions (‘uluww), parallel alternatives (badal), and exact concordances (muwāfaqah), alongside occasional critical assessments of specific narrators .
