al-Thani min Fawaid Abi Uthman al-Buhayri (The Second Part of the Hadith Benefits of Abu Uthman al-Buhayri) is a specialized hadith tract (juz') containing traditions and reports transmitted by the Nishapuri hadith scholar Abu Uthman al-Buhayri (364–451 AH / 974–1059 CE) .
Compilation and Transmission
The collection represents the second fascicle of a larger multi-part compilation of hadith benefits extracted (mukharrajah) from the original auditory records (usul masmu'at) of al-Buhayri, who served as the leading traditionist (muhaddith) and chief authority of transmission (musnid) in Khurasan . The extraction and selection (intikhab) of these texts was carried out for him by Abu Sa'd Sa'id ibn Muhammad al-Sha'bi .
The surviving text was transmitted from al-Buhayri by Abu al-Qasim Zahir ibn Tahir al-Shahhami, who recited it to scholars including the hadith master Abu al-'Ala' Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Fadl in 531 AH . It was subsequently transmitted on al-Shahhami's authority by Abu al-Majd Zahir ibn Abi Tahir al-Thaqafi, from whose reading in Isfahan in Rabi' al-Awwal 606 AH the recorded recension stems .
Contents and Structure
The tract consists of 88 numbered narrations with full chains of transmission (isnad), comprising prophetic hadiths, narrations concerning ritual prayer, travel, pilgrimage, and legal ethics, alongside historical reports and sayings of early ascetics .
The collection draws on al-Buhayri’s diverse teachers across Khurasan, Iraq, and neighboring regions, including:
- Family authorities, such as his grandfather Abu al-Husayn Ahmad ibn Ja'far al-Buhayri and his father Abu 'Amr al-Hafiz .
- Major scholars of Khurasan and Sarakhs, notably al-Hakim al-Naysaburi, Abu Ahmad al-Hakim, Abu 'Ali Zahir ibn Ahmad al-Sarakhsi, and Abu 'Amr Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Hamdan .
- Authorities from Isfarayin, Kufa, Damaghan, and Jurjan .
The text concludes with an ethical testament related on the authority of Ahmad ibn Abi Uthman al-Zahid regarding early fellowship and affection .
