al-Thani min al-Fawaid al-Muntaqat li-Ibn al-Sammak (The Second Part of Selected Hadith Benefits of Ibn al-Sammak) is a short hadith compilation transmitted from the Baghdadi traditionist Abu Amr Uthman ibn Ahmad ibn Abd Allah ibn Yazid al-Daqqaq, commonly known as Ibn al-Sammak (d. 344 AH / 955 CE) .

Content and Structure

The work comprises a selection of transmitted hadiths and narrations. It is also known as Juz' al-Fil (The Part of the Elephant) because it records a narration attributed to Ali in which an elephant is mentioned .

In addition to the narrations of Ibn al-Sammak, the text includes transmissions from Dalaj ibn Ahmad, Ibn Qani, and al-Adami . The primary transmission from Ibn al-Sammak concludes with a textual note marking the end of what was related from him via Ibn al-Hamami, after which narrations of Dalaj ibn Ahmad transmitted through the same path are appended .

Transmission and Manuscript

The chain of transmission (isnad) preserved at the beginning of the text traces the work from Ibn al-Sammak, Dalaj, Ibn Qani, and al-Adami through Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Umar al-Hamami al-Muqri . It was then related from al-Hamami by the chamberlain (al-hajib) Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Allaf al-Muqri, from whom it was received by three scholars: Abu al-Makarim al-Mubarak ibn Muhammad al-Badirai, Abu Muhammad Abd Allah ibn Mansur al-Mawsili, and Abu Bakr Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-Naqqur . It was subsequently transmitted from these three scholars by the hadith master Abd al-Ghani al-Maqdisi .

A manuscript copy of the work survives within the collection of the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus as part of the Umariyya compendia (Majmu 76, treatise 5, folios 94–107) .
