al-Thani min Ajza Abu Ali ibn Shadhan (The Second Part of the Hadith Compilations of Abu Ali ibn Shadhan) is a hadith tract (juz') containing prophetic traditions and reports transmitted by the traditionalist Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Khalaf ibn Shadhan al-Wasiti (d. 246 AH / 860–861 CE) .

Author and Context

The author, Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Khalaf ibn Shadhan ibn Ziyad al-Wasiti al-Bazzaz, was an early hadith transmitter associated with Wasit who traveled to Baghdad and taught there . He is sometimes attributed directly to his grandfather as al-Hasan ibn Shadhan, or named without Shadhan as al-Hasan ibn Khalaf ibn Ziyad, with scholars noting that Shadhan was likely the cognomen (laqab) of his father Khalaf . He died in Baghdad in 246 AH according to Muhammad ibn Ishaq al-Sarraj .

Ibn Shadhan studied under prominent scholars of his era, including Ishaq ibn Yusuf al-Azraq, Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi, Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan, Harami ibn Umara, Yazid ibn Harun, Abu Usama, and Abu Mu'awiya . A broad array of scholars transmitted from him, including al-Bukhari, Baqi ibn Makhlad, Abu Hatim al-Razi, Abu Bakr al-Bazzar, Abu Uruba, Ibn Abi al-Dunya, Ibn Sa'id, Matin, al-Bujayri, and the brothers al-Husayn and al-Qasim ibn Isma'il al-Mahamili . Critical evaluations of his reliability varied: al-Khatib al-Baghdadi graded him as trustworthy (thiqah), Abu Hatim termed him a shaykh, Ibn Hibban listed him in al-Thiqat, and Ibn Adi stated that his narrations were tolerable with nothing strictly reprehensible (munkar), whereas al-Bukhari noted in al-Tarikh al-Awsat under the name al-Hasan ibn Shadhan that some had criticized him .

Content and Manuscript Tradition

The work belongs to the genre of single-volume hadith compendia (ajza' hadithiyya) assembled to transmit individual narrations, chains of transmission (asānīd), and transmitted benefits (fawā'id) received through Ibn Shadhan's authorities .

A surviving witness of the text containing the first half of this second part is preserved as a manuscript in Damascus at the Zahiriyya Library within the composite volume collection (MS Majmu' 3826 / Majami' al-Umariyya 90) .
