al-Thāmin min Muʿjam Shuyūkh al-Dimyāṭī (The Eighth Part of the Biographical Dictionary of the Teachers of al-Dumyāṭī) is a preserved section from the biographical dictionary of teachers compiled by the hadith scholar Abd al-Mumin ibn Khalaf al-Dumyati (d. 705 AH / 1306 CE) .
Context and Scope
The complete Muʿjam Shuyūkh al-Dimyāṭī was arranged by al-Dumyāṭī to document the teachers and transmitters from whom he received hadith across Egypt and during his scholarly journeys through Syria, Iraq, and the Hijaz . Described across historical accounts as spanning two large volumes, four volumes, or forty-four hadith parts (ajzāʾ), the dictionary opened with teachers bearing the name Muḥammad .
The eighth part (al-Juzʾ al-Thāmin) covers twenty-five teachers, beginning with the entry for Muḥammad ibn Muqbil al-Baghdādī and concluding the work's opening section dedicated to teachers named Muḥammad (al-Muḥammadīn) . The total number of teachers named Muḥammad across the first eight parts is recorded at the start of this section as 235, while a concluding note counts them as 230, stating that the subsequent ninth part begins the alphabetical arrangement with the letter Alif .
Method and Content
The entries in this part were transmitted through al-Dumyāṭī's dictation (imlāʾ) . For each teacher, al-Dumyāṭī typically provides:
- Full name, lineage, kunya, and geographical or tribal nisbas .
- The location and circumstances of his reading or audition with them, such as in Baghdad, Damascus, Alexandria, Mosul, or Hama .
- Hadith transmissions cited with full chains of narration leading back to the Prophet ﷺ, accompanied by comparative notes referencing major canonical collections—including Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and the Sunan works of al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah—highlighting elevated chains (ʿuluww) or technical variations such as replacements (badal) .
- Poetic verses recited directly by the subjects in various literary meters .
- Precise biographical data, including birth dates, death dates, places of passing, and burial grounds .
