al-Thamar al-Dani Sharh Risalat Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani (Arabic: الثمر الداني شرح رسالة ابن أبي زيد القيرواني, fully titled al-Thamar al-Dani fi Taqrib al-Maʿani Sharh Risalat Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani) is a legal commentary on the Maliki primer al-Risala by Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani (d. 386 AH / 996 CE), written by the Egyptian Maliki scholar Salih ibn Abd al-Sami al-Azhari (d. 1335 AH / 1916–1917 CE).

Content and Method

The work provides an explanatory commentary (sharh) on the text of al-Risala, an early manual covering creed (ʿaqida), devotional acts, transactions, and general ethical manners according to the Maliki school. Salih al-Azhari explains Ibn Abi Zayd's phraseology clause by clause, beginning with the introductory basmala and opening benedictions, providing grammatical clarifications, definitions of terms, and elaborations of legal rulings.

In Maliki literature, al-Thamar al-Dani is classified among the concise commentaries (al-shuruh al-mukhtasara) on al-Risala, designed to make the original text accessible to students.

Publication History

The work was printed in Cairo at al-Matbaʿa al-Wahbiyya (1330 AH) and by Dar Ihya' al-Kutub al-ʿArabiyya (Mustafa al-Babi al-Halabi, 1363 AH / 1943 CE). Subsequent editions have been issued by Maktabat al-Manar in Tunis and al-Maktaba al-Thaqafiyya in Beirut.
