al-Thalith wa al-Thamanun min al-Fawaid al-Afrad (Arabic: الثالث والثمانون من الفوائد الأفراد, lit. 'The Eighty-Third [Part] of the Unique Beneficial Hadiths') is an individual hadith part (juzʾ) compiled by the traditionist and critic Abu al-Hasan al-Daraqutni (306–385 AH / 918–995 CE) . It constitutes the 83rd installment of his larger work dedicated to unique and singular narrations (al-Afrād or Kitāb al-Afrād wa-al-Gharāʾib min Ḥadīth Rasūl Allāh), a massive compilation consisting of one hundred parts .
Transmission and Audition History
The transmission (riwāyah) of this eighty-third part from al-Daraqutni passed through a chain of traditionists:
- Abu Talib Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Fath al-Ushari (366–451 AH), directly from al-Daraqutni .
- Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Abd al-Baqi al-Ansari al-Bazzaz (442–535 AH), from al-Ushari .
- Abu Ahmad Abd al-Wahhab ibn Ali ibn Sukayna (519–607 AH), from Ibn Abd al-Baqi .
- Abu al-Faraj Abd al-Latif ibn Abd al-Mun'im al-Harrani (587–672 AH), from Ibn Sukayna .
- Fatima bint Abi al-Walid Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Jibril al-Darbandiyya (661–737 AH), from al-Harrani .
- Abu al-Faraj Abd al-Rahman ibn Ahmad ibn al-Mubarak al-Ghazzi (714–799 AH), from Fatima al-Darbandiyya .
- Transmitted from al-Ghazzi by both Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani and Shams al-Din Muhammad ibn Umar al-Maltuti (780–873 AH) .
- Abu al-Mahasin Yusuf ibn Shahin (828–899 AH), the grandson of Ibn Hajar, from both Ibn Hajar and al-Maltuti .
The transmission records (samāʿāt) preserved across its copies document multiple historical reading sessions: in 533 AH before Abu Bakr al-Ansari; in 599 AH before Abd al-Wahhab ibn Sukayna; in 642 AH and 666 AH before Abd al-Latif al-Harrani; in 730 AH before Fatima al-Darbandiyya; in 797 AH before Abd al-Rahman al-Ghazzi; and in 868 AH before Shams al-Din al-Maltuti . In 898 AH, the manuscript was audited in a session before its scribe Yusuf ibn Shahin, read aloud by Khalil ibn Abd al-Qadir al-Ja'bari (869–906 AH) in the presence of a group of listeners .
Manuscript Transmission
The surviving manuscript of this part is held at the Egyptian National Library (Dar al-Kutub al-Misriyya) in Cairo under composite codex number 1558 (Majmūʿ 1558) . It is bound in two separated sections—folios 45a–46b and folios 319a–328b—with a missing lacuna (saqṭ) situated between them .
This physical copy was transcribed by Abu al-Mahasin Yusuf ibn Shahin, who copied it from a manuscript penned by Taj al-Din Ahmad ibn Abd al-Qadir ibn Maktum (682–749 AH) . The text contains occasional vocalization and diacritical marks (muʿjamah), alongside classical scribal notations such as taḍbīb (marking textual doubts), taṣḥīḥ (corrections), and collation marks . On its title page, the work is titled al-Thālith wa-al-Thamānūn min al-Fawāʾid al-Afrād, while certain audition notes designate it as al-Thālith wa-al-Thamānūn min Afrād al-Dāraquṭnī .
