al-Taysir wa al-Tabsir lima Fata al-Bukhari fi al-Ilal al-Kabir (Arabic: التيسير والتبصير لما فات البخاري في العلل الكبير, lit. 'Facilitation and Insight into What Escaped al-Bukhari in al-Ilal al-Kabir') is a contemporary study in hadith criticism and narrator evaluation (ilm al-rijal) written by Abd al-Hakim Salih (Abd al-Hakim Salih al-Yazidi al-Yafi'i). The work provides critical scrutiny, additions, and supplementary commentary on the hadith evaluations attributed to Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari in al-Ilal al-Kabir by Abu Isa al-Tirmidhi.
Background and Purpose
The author composed the work following his completion of studies on Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's Taqrib al-Tahdhib—which yielded his book Taqrib al-Taqrib (also titled Taqrib Taqrib al-Tahdhib)—and his book al-Takmil ala Tuhfat al-Tahsil. He subsequently turned to examining the judgments of al-Bukhari preserved in al-Tirmidhi's al-Ilal al-Kabir, noting that while al-Bukhari holds an esteemed standing in hadith criticism, human scholarly efforts remain open to subsequent review and tracking. The text was completed in Doha, Qatar, on Friday, 28 Ramadan 1446 AH (28 March 2025 CE).
Structure and Methodology
The work relies upon the edition of al-Tirmidhi's al-Ilal al-Kabir edited by Subhi al-Samarra'i, Abu al-Ma'ati al-Nuri, and Mahmud Khalil al-Sa'idi (published in Beirut in 1409 AH / 1989 CE). The author retains the base text and appends his critical findings to individual entries, using authentic chains of transmission (al-asanid al-sahiha) gathered from primary reference works.
To structure his additions and maintain scholarly deference toward al-Bukhari, the author employs designated introductory phrases:
- "Qultu" ("I said"): introduces his personal observations.
- "Wa-lam yadhkur dhalika sahib al-Tahdhib" ("The author of al-Tahdhib did not mention this") or "wa-anhu aydan" ("and also on his authority"): notes missing biographical details or corroborating narrator data.
- "Fa'idah" ("Scholarly benefit"): introduces supplementary observations.
- "Fihi nazar" ("There is room for scrutiny"): marks points where he reassesses al-Bukhari's verdicts on narrators or chains, such as uncovering corroborating paths (mutaba'at) or highlighting narrator reliability endorsements from other early authorities like Ahmad ibn Abd Allah al-Ijli and Ibn Hibban.
In his introduction, the author provides a reference table enumerating the eighty-one specific hadiths from al-Ilal al-Kabir on which he wrote critical reviews: numbers 1, 2, 19, 28, 30, 32, 35, 41, 54, 58, 64, 72, 74, 76, 96, 143, 153, 159, 165, 166, 173, 175, 176, 179, 181, 190, 208, 214, 219, 228, 241, 259, 268, 274, 275, 294, 306, 309, 331, 345, 348, 351, 356, 357, 359, 361, 374, 394, 400, 412, 423, 442, 446, 450, 452, 455, 460, 463, 485, 512, 513, 522, 528, 532, 542, 554, 557, 562, 573, 600, 623, 644, 660, 661, 672, 674, 682, 700, 704, 707, and 717.
