al-Taswir al-Nabawi lil-Qiyam al-Khuluqiya wa al-Tashriiya fi al-Hadith al-Sharif (The Prophetic Imagery of Moral and Legislative Values in the Noble Hadith) is a rhetorical and legal study of Hadith literature by the Egyptian scholar Ali Ali Subh, completed in Shawwal 1422 AH (January 2002 CE). The book investigates how the artistic and rhetorical imagery of the Prophet Muhammad's traditions conveys ethical and juridical principles.

Background and Origin

The contents of the work originated as a series of radio episodes broadcast on the Holy Quran Radio in Cairo (Idha‘at al-Qur'an al-Karim bi-l-Qahirah) as part of the daily program Balaghat al-Rasul ﷺ ("The Eloquence of the Messenger ﷺ"), presented by Abdullah al-Khuli. Subh later organized and expanded these analyses into a systematic treatise focusing on the organic connection between prophetic eloquence and Islamic ethics and law.

Content and Method

Subh examines prophetic traditions across major domains of faith, worship, and social interaction, including chapters on Islam and faith (al-Islam wa al-Iman), ritual prayer, fasting, the pilgrimage, and interpersonal ethics.

Throughout the text, the author employs a consistent analytical structure for each tradition:

  • Textual contextualization: Citing the transmitted hadith along with its primary compilers and examining its general theological or practical theme.
  • Literary and rhetorical analysis (al-Taswir al-Adabi): Analyzing the stylistic mechanisms of the text, such as representational similes (al-tashbih al-tamthili), restrictive devices (aslub al-qasr), antithesis, semantic progression from ambiguity to clarification (al-idah ba‘d al-ibham), nominal sentence structures, and phonetic harmony.
  • Deduction of moral and legal values (al-Qiyam al-Khuluqiya wa al-Tashri‘iya): Concluding each study with an enumerated synthesis of the rulings, behavioral obligations, and spiritual values established by the tradition's literary expression.
