al-Tasi min Fawaid Abi Uthman al-Buhayri (The Ninth [Part] of the Benefits of Abu Uthman al-Buhayri) is a hadith tract (juz') containing ninety-two narrations, reports, and scholarly anecdotes extracted from the auditions of the Nishapuri traditionist Abu Uthman Sa'id ibn Muhammad al-Buhayri (d. 451 AH / 1059 CE) .

Transmission and Compilation

The material was extracted (kharrajaha) and selected from al-Buhayri's auditions by Abu Sa'd Sa'id ibn Muhammad al-Sha'bi . The primary line of transmission recorded in the text runs from Abu Uthman al-Buhayri to Abu al-Qasim Zahir ibn Tahir al-Shahhami, through whom it was read by Abu al-Ala Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Fadl in 531 AH, and subsequently transmitted to Abu al-Majd Zahir ibn Abi Tahir al-Thaqafi, who held a reading of the text in Isfahan during Rabi' al-Awwal of 606 AH .

Scope and Contents

The part comprises 92 numbered items encompassing prophetic traditions, statements of early jurists and ascetics, and historical narratives . It opens with an admonition reported on the authority of 'Adi ibn Thabit al-Ansari concerning caution against excessive passions and seclusion with non-mahram women .

A substantial portion of the text features counsel, definitions, and ethical sayings transmitted from prominent figures of early Islamic asceticism and Sufism, including al-Hasan al-Basri, Fudayl ibn 'Iyad, al-Junayd, Abu Yazid al-Bistami, and Yahya ibn Mu'adh . It also includes biographical and scholarly anecdotes, such as al-Shafi'i's recollection of studying under Malik ibn Anas as a young student, statements regarding the importance of chains of transmission (isnad) from Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak, and theological aphorisms transmitted from Ja'far al-Sadiq and Ali al-Rida . The text concludes with an athar attributed to Umar ibn al-Khattab encouraging the study of poetry for its moral insights and eloquence .
