al-Tasi min al-Khulaiyat (Arabic: التاسع من الخلعيات, lit. 'The Ninth [Part] of al-Khala'iyyat') is the ninth fascicle of al-Fawa'id al-muntaqah al-hisan min al-sihah wa-l-ghara'ib, a twenty-part Hadith compilation transmitting the narrations and auditions of the Egyptian Shafi'i jurist and hadith scholar Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn al-Hasan al-Khala'i (405–492 AH / 1014–1099 CE) .

Background and Compilation

The text forms a constituent part of the larger collection known colloquially as al-Khala'iyyat (or Fawa'id al-Khala'i), which comprises twenty separate fascicles (ajza'). The compilation was not authored directly as a treatise by al-Khala'i; rather, the hadiths were selected and organized (takhrij) by Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Shirazi from the body of auditions and transmission notebooks (masmu'at) belonging to al-Khala'i, who was recognized as the premier transmitter (musnid) of Egypt in his era .

Structure and Content

The ninth part opens with the full title al-Juz' al-tasi' min al-fawa'id al-muntaqat al-hisan min al-sihah wa-l-ghara'ib (The Ninth Part of Selected Fine Traditions, from the Sound and the Rare) . Like other parts in the collection, it consists of a sequence of prophetic traditions and biographical transmissions supplied with their complete chains of audition (isnad).

Al-Khala'i received many of the opening narrations of this part from his principal Egyptian teacher, the cloth merchant and hadith scholar Abu Muhammad Abd al-Rahman ibn Umar ibn al-Nahhas (d. 416 AH), who narrated to al-Khala'i during auditions held in Jumada al-Ula of the year 413 AH . Among the texts recorded in this fascicle are traditions transmitted through Ibn al-Nahhas back to the Companion Anas ibn Malik, including the prophetic saying regarding divine decree (al-qadar): أَخَافُ عَلَى أُمَّتِي تَصْدِيقٌ بِالنُّجُومِ وَتَكْذِيبٌ بِالْقَدَرِ، وَلَا يُؤْمِنُ عَبْدٌ بِاللَّهِ حَتَّى يُؤْمِنَ بِالْقَدَرِ خَيْرِهِ وَشَرِّهِ حُلْوِهِ وَمُرِّهِ ("I fear for my nation belief in astrology and denial of the divine decree; no servant truly believes in Allah until he believes in destiny, its good and its bad, its sweet and its bitter") .

Transmission and Reception

The primary line of transmission for al-Khala'iyyat ran through al-Khala'i's long-serving student Abu Muhammad Abd Allah ibn Rifa'ah ibn Ghadir al-Sa'di . From Ibn Rifa'ah, the text was read and verified in Cairo at the Old Mosque (al-Jami' al-Atiq) before scholars such as the genealogist and judge al-Sharif Abu Ali Muhammad ibn As'ad al-Husayni al-Maliki .

The collection circulated widely among subsequent generations of traditionists across Egypt, the Levant, and Iraq. Later hadith masters, such as Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, documented their formal chains of audition covering the twentieth parts, including specific transmission chains for the ninth fascicle . Owing to the high elevation (uluww) of al-Khala'i's chains, the hadith master Nur al-Din al-Haythami (d. 807 AH) reorganized the entire collection of al-Khala'iyyat according to standard legal and topical headings in a work titled Tartib al-Khala'iyyat . Later biographical critics also consulted the collection to evaluate rare and problematic narrations circulating through late Egyptian chains .
