al-Tasi al-Ashar min al-Khulaiyat (al-Juz' al-Tasi' 'Ashar min al-Khila'iyyat, "The Nineteenth Part of the Khila'iyyat") is a hadith booklet (juz') forming the nineteenth installment of the twenty-part collection al-Fawa'id al-Khila'iyyat, transmitted by the Shafi'i jurist and traditionist Abu al-Hasan al-Khila'i (405–492 AH / 1014–1099 CE) .
Composition and Context
The broader work from which this part is drawn is titled al-Fawa'id al-Muntaqat al-Hisan al-Sihah wa-al-Ghara'ib ("Selected Fine Traditions, Sound and Rare"), commonly known as al-Khila'iyyat or al-Fawa'id al-Khila'iyyat . The collection spans twenty individual parts compiled and extracted (takhrij) for al-Khila'i by Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Shirazi (also recorded as Abu Nasr Ahmad ibn al-Husayn al-Shirazi) . The collection was esteemed among traditionists for preserved scholarly benefits (fawa'id) and for containing the highest chains of transmission (isnad) circulating in Egypt during al-Khila'i's era .
Contents
Like the other parts in the series, the nineteenth part presents prophetic traditions and narrations recorded with full isnads going back through al-Khila'i's teachers . The texts open with transmissions received by al-Khila'i from figures such as Abu Muhammad Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad ibn Sa'id ibn al-Nahhas and Abu Muhammad Abd al-Rahman ibn Umar ibn Muhammad al-Shahid, reporting from Abu Sa'id Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ziyad ibn al-A'rabi in Mecca . Among the hadiths recorded in this part is the narration regarding envy: «لَا حَسَدَ إِلَّا فِي اثْنَتَيْنِ، رَجُلٌ آتَاهُ اللَّهُ الْقُرْآنَ فَهُوَ يَقُومُ بِهِ آنَاءَ اللَّيْلِ، وَآنَاءَ النَّهَارِ، وَرَجُلٌ آتَاهُ اللَّهُ مَالًا فَهُوَ يُنْفِقُهُ آنَاءَ اللَّيْلِ وَآنَاءَ النَّهَارِ» ("There is no envy except in two cases: a man to whom God has given the Quran and he recites it during the hours of the night and day, and a man to whom God has given wealth and he spends it during the hours of the night and day") .
Transmission and Reception
The nineteenth part was transmitted as part of the overall Khila'iyyat through primary conduits of al-Khila'i's transmission, foremost among them Abu Muhammad Abd Allah ibn Rifa'a al-Sa'di and subsequently Muhammad ibn Imad al-Harrani . Later scholars audited and documented their chains for this specific part, including Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, who recorded his reading of the nineteenth and twentieth parts via Maryam bint al-Adhra'i from Yunus ibn Ibrahim al-Dabbusi and Nasir al-Din Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Sam'un . Additionally, Nur al-Din al-Haythami later reorganized the traditions of the entire Khila'iyyat corpus by subject matter into thematic chapters (abwab) .
