al-Tarikh al-Mansuri (also titled Talkhis al-Kashf wa al-Bayan fi Hawadith al-Zaman) is an Arabic historical chronicle written by the Ayyubid-era administrator, poet, and historian Ibn Nazif al-Hamawi (d. 631 AH / 1234 CE; other sources place his death at c. 650 AH or c. 690 AH) . The work focuses on political and regional history, documenting contemporary events and the affairs of the Ayyubid dynasty .
Overview and Historical Reception
The chronicle was authored by Abu al-Fada'il Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Abd al-Aziz ibn Nazif al-Ghassani al-Hamawi, who served as a scribe and vizier in Syria . The work served as an essential primary reference for later medieval historians; the Egyptian historian al-Maqrizi drew upon its material and recorded extensive selections from it in his notebooks and historical treatises when documenting the history of the Ayyubids and surrounding realms .
Modern Editions
The work was published in Leningrad in 1960 . A critical edition prepared by Abu al-Iyd Dudu and revised by Adnan Darwish was subsequently published in Damascus by the Arab Language Academy at Matba'at al-Hijaz in 1402 AH / 1981 CE .
