al-Taqyid wal-Idah Sharh Muqaddimat Ibn al-Salah (Arabic: التقييد والإيضاح شرح مقدمة ابن الصلاح, lit. 'The Restriction and Clarification: Commentary on Ibn al-Salah’s Introduction') is a classical treatise on hadith methodology written by the Shafi'i scholar Zayn al-Din al-Iraqi (d. 806 AH / 1404 CE) . Originally titled al-Taqyid wal-Idah lima Utliqa wa-Ughliqa min Kitab Ibn al-Salah, it is also commonly referred to in scholarly literature as Nukat al-Iraqi 'ala Ibn al-Salah .
Background and Purpose
The book is an analytical commentary and set of critical marginalia (nukat) on Ma'rifat Anwa' 'Ilm al-Hadith (commonly known as Muqaddimat Ibn al-Salah), the foundational 7th-century AH compendium of hadith terminology composed by Ibn al-Salah (d. 643 AH) .
In his introduction, al-Iraqi explains that while Ibn al-Salah’s manual represents the finest and most comprehensive synthesis of hadith nomenclature produced by earlier traditionists, certain passages required qualifications (taqyid), obscure definitions needed clarification (idah), and several points had generated scholarly disagreements . Al-Iraqi also composed the work to defend Ibn al-Salah against unfounded criticisms leveled by later commentators, stating that whenever an objection was invalid, he cited it with the passive phrasing u'turida ("it was objected") and established the correctness of Ibn al-Salah’s original stance . Al-Iraqi had previously examined the critical notes gathered by Mughultay (d. 762 AH) in his Islah Ibn al-Salah, as well as various abridgments of the Muqaddimah . Al-Iraqi completed the fair copy (tabyid) of the work on Sunday, 21 Dhu al-Qi'dah 796 AH .
Method and Structure
Rather than offering an exhaustive, word-by-word exposition of Ibn al-Salah's text, al-Iraqi structured the work selectively around methodological problems, ambiguous terminological formulations, and disputed points . As a result of this selective approach, al-Iraqi did not comment on nineteen of the individual categories of hadith sciences treated by Ibn al-Salah, focusing solely on topics that warranted correction, refinement, or defense . Where Ibn al-Salah's reasoning was sound against critics, al-Iraqi defended it; where valid objections had been raised—such as Badr al-Din Ibn Jama'ah's critique of Ibn al-Salah's stance on al-Hakim al-Naysaburi's authentications—al-Iraqi endorsed the critique .
Reception and Publication
The work is considered among the most rigorous classical commentaries on Ibn al-Salah's text and served as a foundational precursor to subsequent hadith studies, including the commentary and critical glosses of al-Iraqi's student Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in his al-Nukat 'ala Kitab Ibn al-Salah .
The text was published in Aleppo in 1350 AH by Muhammad Raghib al-Tabbakh alongside the text of Ibn al-Salah under the title al-Taqyid wal-Idah Sharh Muqaddimat Ibn al-Salah . In that edition, al-Tabbakh supplemented the nineteen categories left unannotated by al-Iraqi with an appendix titled al-Misbah 'ala Muqaddimat Ibn al-Salah, drawn from al-Suyuti's Tadrib al-Rawi and al-Hakim's Ma'rifat 'Ulum al-Hadith .
