Content and Methodology
The text is a line-by-line commentary on al-Manzuma al-Bayquniya, the well-known introductory poem on hadith classification . For each term mentioned in the verses, al-Mashshat provides:
- Definitions and Conditions: Technical criteria and semantic boundaries for foundational hadith categories—including sahih (sound), hasan (fair), da'if (weak), marfu' (elevated), maqtu' (severed), musnad (supported), and muttasil (continuous) .
- Illustrative Examples: Practical examples from hadith collections illustrating the practical application of each classification .
- Legal and Epistemic Rulings: The probative status (hukm) of each category in theological principles (usul) and substantive legal rulings (furu'), detailing which transmissions are accepted as evidence and which are rejected .
- Supplementary Benefits (Fawa'id): Brief excursuses addressing specialized aspects of transmission, such as the distinctive nature of unbroken chains (ittisal) in the Muslim tradition .
