al-Tanwir Sharh al-Jami al-Saghir (Illumination: Commentary on the Small Collection) is an extensive Arabic hadith commentary by the Yemeni scholar Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Amir al-San'ani (d. 1182 AH / 1768 CE) on the hadith compendium al-Jami al-Saghir min Hadith al-Bashir al-Nadhir by Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (d. 911 AH / 1505 CE) .

Composition and Context

Al-San'ani completed the commentary approximately twenty-eight years before his death . He dictated the text to his son, after which it was read back and cross-checked against his dictation multiple times, with margin notes recording that portions reached a fourth collation session (balagha al-muwajahah al-rabi'ah) alongside additional glosses inserted by the author during those reviews . Within the commentary, al-San'ani frequently referenced his other treatises and books, including Tawdih al-Afkar, Iwqadh al-Fikrah, al-Rawdah al-Nadiyyah, and al-Yawaqit fi al-Mawaqit . The book encompasses 10,013 hadiths in its extant recorded format .

Method and Content

Al-San'ani focused on elucidating the Prophet's intended meanings, underlying legal rulings, and spiritual wisdoms supported by Islamic legal principles, using concise expressions rather than extending into unnecessary grammatical disquisitions or multiplying conflicting scholarly opinions .

A central feature of his method was critical textual scrutiny:

  • Manuscript collation: He relied on multiple manuscript copies of al-Jami al-Saghir, including al-Suyuti's own autograph draft, noting textual variants, missing entries, and scribal errors across manuscripts .
  • Evaluation of grading symbols: He cautioned against relying uncritically on al-Suyuti's grading symbols—which denoted sahih, hasan, or da'if—explaining that these notations were prone to scribal distortions and mistranscriptions, while also defending al-Suyuti against certain objections by explaining the purpose of those shorthand symbols .
  • Critique of earlier commentaries: He frequently compared his commentary with earlier works on al-Jami al-Saghir, especially Abd al-Ra'uf al-Munawi's Fayd al-Qadir and al-Taysir, highlighting passages where al-Munawi had commented upon corrupt or uncollated exemplar texts .
  • Independent assessments: Throughout the work, al-San'ani expressed independent judgments on hadith authenticity, narrator reliability, jurisprudential questions, and theological matters aligned with Sunnah traditions .

Preservation and Publication

The work remained unpublished in manuscript form for centuries; its complete primary manuscript was preserved in Maktabat al-Ahqaf in Yemen (al-Kaf Collection, no. 17 Hadith) . It was first critically edited by Muhammad Ishaq Muhammad Ibrahim and published in Riyadh in 1432 AH / 2011 CE in eleven volumes, with prefatory recommendations by Salih ibn Muhammad al-Luhaydan and Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Ghunayman .
