Al-Tankīl bi-mā fī Taʾnīb al-Kawtharī min al-Abāṭīl (Repudiation of the Falsehoods in al-Kawtharī's Rebuke) is a multi-volume critique of hadith criticism, legal methodology, and theology by the Yemeni scholar ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yaḥyā al-Muʿallimī (1313–1386 AH / 1895–1966 CE) . Written in response to Muḥammad Zāhid al-Kawtharī's polemical work Taʾnīb al-Khaṭīb, it serves as a defense of classical hadith transmitters and Sunni imams against accusations of unreliability and doctrinal deviation .
Background and Composition
In 1360 AH, the Hanafi scholar Muḥammad Zāhid al-Kawtharī published Taʾnīb al-Khaṭīb ʿalā mā Sāqahu fī Tarjamat Abī Ḥanīfah min al-Akādhīb in Egypt to challenge the critical reports collected by al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī regarding Abū Ḥanīfah in Tārīkh Baghdād . In doing so, al-Kawtharī leveled extensive criticisms against numerous traditional hadith scholars, narrators, and jurists . At the request of fellow scholars, al-Muʿallimī undertook a detailed review of Taʾnīb al-Khaṭīb while working in India . He initially titled an introductory note on the subject al-Naqd al-Barīʾ .
Al-Muʿallimī drafted the work over a span of under two years, completing it around 1370 AH . Prior to its final release, he published an extract highlighting examples of al-Kawtharī’s alleged distortions under the title Ṭalīʿat al-Tankīl in Egypt in 1368 AH . Al-Kawtharī responded to the extract with a treatise entitled al-Tarḥīb bi-Naqd al-Taʾnīb, prompting al-Muʿallimī to pen two follow-up rejoinders, Taʿzīz al-Ṭalīʿah and Shukr al-Tarḥīb .
Structure and Scope
The book opens with five preliminary chapters outlining the author's purpose, the hazards of unfounded attacks on hadith authorities, the phenomenon of excessive veneration (ghulūw) of leading figures, the nature of mutual criticism among scholars, and responses to specific historical justifications raised by al-Kawtharī (such as the theological controversy over the createdness of the Quran) . The main text is structured into four distinct parts:
- Methodological Principles (al-Qawāʿid): An analysis of rules of biographical evaluation (al-jarḥ wa-al-taʿdīl) and hadith transmission where al-Muʿallimī argued that al-Kawtharī had misapplied foundational principles .
- Biographical Entries (al-Tarājim): An alphabetically arranged dictionary containing critical evaluations of approximately 273 (and by another count, roughly 300) narrators and scholars challenged or disparaged by al-Kawtharī—including the Companion Anas ibn Mālik, Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, the imams Mālik ibn Anas, al-Shāfiʿī, and Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, and al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī—alongside individuals of questioned reliability whom al-Kawtharī attempted to rehabilitate .
- Legal Issues (al-Fiqhiyyāt): Subtitled al-Baḥth maʿa al-Ḥanafiyyah fī Sabʿ ʿAshrata Qaḍiyyah, this section examines seventeen legal questions concerning traditions disputed or rejected in Hanafi jurisprudence .
- Theology (al-ʿAqāʾid): Known also by the standalone title al-Qāʾid ilā Taṣḥīḥ al-ʿAqāʾid, this part defends the theological positions of the early hadith scholars and addresses specific doctrinal arguments raised by al-Kawtharī .
Method and Reception
Al-Muʿallimī's method is characterized by close textual scrutiny, adherence to evidentiary proof, and a measured polemical tone that eschews personal abuse . He maintained that his objective was not to defame Abū Ḥanīfah, but rather to redress imbalances, clarify errors in narrator evaluation, and articulate the broader principles of the Sunnah .
Later scholars widely acclaimed the book as a major contribution to modern hadith scholarship. Muḥammad Nāṣir al-Dīn al-Albānī praised its scientific rigor, patience, and adherence to proper debate etiquette . Bakr Abū Zayd noted that al-Muʿallimī demonstrated exceptional skill in narrator criticism and derivation rules, noting that contemporary researchers drew heavily from it .
Publication History
The work remained unpublished during the author's lifetime. Following al-Muʿallimī's death in Ṣafar 1386 AH, the first edition was issued in two volumes in Shawwāl 1386 AH by al-Maktab al-Islāmī, funded by Muḥammad Naṣīf and edited with verification and footnotes by al-Albānī, with additional contributions by ʿAbd al-Razzāq Ḥamzah and Zuhayr al-Shāwīsh . A second revised edition appeared from the same publisher in 1406 AH / 1986 CE .
Within the collected works project Āthār al-Muʿallimī, the book occupies volumes 10 and 11, edited by ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad al-ʿUmrān, Muḥammad Ajmal al-Iṣlāḥī, Muḥammad ʿUzayr Shams, and ʿĀdil ibn ʿAbd al-Shakūr al-Zurqī .
