al-Tanbihat al-Latifa ala ma Ihtawat alayhi al-Aqida al-Wasitiyya min al-Mabahith al-Munifa (Subtle Remarks on the Exalted Inquiries Contained in al-Aqida al-Wasitiyya) is a concise commentary on Ibn Taymiyya's (d. 728 AH / 1328 CE) creedal treatise al-Aqida al-Wasitiyya, authored by the Hanbali scholar Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Sadi (d. 1376 AH / 1956 CE) .
Purpose and Methodology
In his introduction, al-Sadi notes that although al-Aqida al-Wasitiyya is concise and clearly consolidates the essential tenets of Islamic faith, it benefits from explanatory remarks clarifying how scriptural citations from the Quran and Prophetic Hadith establish the intended doctrinal points . His stated aim was to connect interrelated topics, synthesize matters scattered across different discussions, highlight the practical impact of theological principles on moral character and spiritual refinement, and offer concise explanations in accessible language .
Contents
The commentary addresses the foundational topics established in al-Aqida al-Wasitiyya, including:
- The stance of Ahl al-Sunnah regarding the affirmation of God's names and divine attributes without distorting (tahrif), negating (ta'til), specifying modality (takyif), or likening them to creation (tamthil) .
- The definition and realities of faith (iman), alongside the theological rulings concerning the perpetrator of major sins .
- Divine decree and predestination (qadar), its theological levels, and responses to divergent sects .
- The virtues of the Companions, obligations toward the Prophet's household (Ahl al-Bayt), and refutations of sectarian stances regarding them .
- The doctrine concerning miracles granted to righteous allies of God (karamat al-awliya) .
- The characteristics and centrist theological method of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jama'ah, followed by ethical imperatives and noble conduct viewed as complementary dimensions of sound belief .
Publication History and Editions
Al-Sadi granted authorization for the work's publication during his lifetime, and it was first printed under the oversight of Abd al-Rahman ibn Ruwayshid and Sulayman ibn Hammad . This initial printing, produced in 64 medium-sized pages at Matba'at al-Bayan in Beirut (and dated in some bibliographic records to 1369 AH), included supplemental explanatory notes selected from classes delivered by Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz at the Riyadh Scientific Institute (Ma'had al-Riyadh al-Ilmi) .
Subsequent editions include a checked text with Hadith verification by Ali Hasan al-Halabi, published in 107 pages by Dar Ibn al-Qayyim in Dammam (1409–1410 AH / 1989 CE) . An edition was issued by Dar Taybah in Riyadh (1414 AH / 1993 CE), as well as an edition edited by Ashraf Abd al-Maqsud published by Adwa' al-Salaf (1420 AH / 1999 CE) .
