al-Tanbih wal-Iqaz lima fi Dhuyul Tadhkirat al-Huffaz (The Alert and Awakening Regarding What is Contained in the Supplements to Tadhkirat al-Huffaz) is a critical treatise by the Egyptian Hanafi scholar and hadith specialist Ahmad al-Tahtawi (1275–1355 AH / 1859–1936 CE), written to rectify and clarify historical and biographical errors in the printed collection of supplements to al-Dhahabi's Tadhkirat al-Huffaz .
Background and Purpose
The impetus for composing the work arose when the publisher Husam al-Din al-Qudsi gifted al-Tahtawi a copy of the three supplements to al-Dhahabi's biographical dictionary of hadith masters—comprising the continuations by Abu al-Mahasin al-Husayni, Ibn Fahd al-Makki, and al-Suyuti—which al-Qudsi had printed in Damascus accompanied by annotations by Muhammad Zahid al-Kawthari . While admiring the publication and al-Kawthari's marginal notes, al-Tahtawi identified various points requiring clarification or correction, which he compiled into a concise monograph under the title al-Tanbih wal-Iqaz lima fi Dhuyul Tabaqat al-Huffaz (and Dhuyul Tadhkirat al-Huffaz) and sent to al-Qudsi and al-Kawthari to verify historical facts .
Methodology and Content
The book proceeds through the printed edition sequentially by volume and page number, pointing out specific lines that contain errors . Al-Tahtawi addresses several types of flaws in the text and its marginalia:
- Scribal corruptions and typographical errors in scholars' names, patronymics, and lineages .
- Dropped ancestral names or confusion between similar names (such as Hasan and Husayn, or Sab'in and Tis'in) .
- Inaccuracies in recorded birth years, death dates, and lifespans .
- Erroneous attributions of teachers, students, and works .
To substantiate his emendations, al-Tahtawi collates readings against major classical biographical and historical references, including Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's al-Durar al-Kaminah, Ibn Rajab's Tabaqat al-Hanabilah, Taj al-Din al-Subki's Tabaqat al-Shafi'iyyah al-Kubra, Ibn al-Imad al-Hanbali's Shadharat al-Dhahab, Ibn al-Wardi's chronicle, and al-Dhahabi's al-Mu'jam al-Mukhtass .
Publication and Reception
The work was published by Husam al-Din al-Qudsi at Matba'at al-Taraqqi in Damascus in 1348 AH (1929–1930 CE) in 166 pages excluding corrections . In a publisher's note, al-Qudsi commended al-Tahtawi's critical verification, noting that such meticulous research was rarely found even in major historical chronicles . Al-Kawthari also received al-Tahtawi's corrections favorably; he welcomed scholarly feedback on his annotations and consistently spoke highly of al-Tahtawi, recognizing that both the original notes and the subsequent corrections were aimed at scholarly benefit .
