Al-Tamyiz (Kitab al-Tamyiz, "The Distinction") is a foundational treatise on hadith criticism and hidden defects ('ilal) by Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj (d. 261 AH / 875 CE) .
Subject and Scope
The book is devoted to the methodology of identifying hidden defects ('ilal al-hadith) and distinguishing sound narrations from flawed, erroneous, or misattributed transmissions . It illustrates the critical procedures employed by early hadith scholars to cross-examine chains of transmission (isnad) and texts (matn), demonstrating how discrepancies and transmitter errors are uncovered . Bibliographers such as al-Hakim al-Naysaburi and al-Sakhawi list al-Tamyiz as a distinct work separate from Muslim's other title, Kitab al-Ilal .
Extant Text and Transmission
The surviving text of al-Tamyiz is an incomplete abridgment or fragment rather than the complete original work . Evidence for this truncated state includes numerous classical quotations attributed to al-Tamyiz that are missing from the surviving copy, as well as explicit abridgment markers within the text, such as the phrase «فذكر الحديث» ("so he mentioned the hadith") . Although early sources report that Ibn Abd al-Barr produced an abridgment of the work, scholars consider the extant text unlikely to be his exact summary due to structural defects and poor handling in several places . The surviving text has been preserved in a manuscript written in Maghrebi script .
Method and Reception
Al-Tamyiz is distinguished by its simplicity and clarity of exposition compared to other early works on hadith defects . It is considered one of the most effective texts for understanding the critical principles and practical methods of early hadith critics, showcasing the technical mastery that underpinned Muslim's composition of Sahih Muslim .
