al-Tamam fi Tafsir Ashar Hudhayl Mimma Aghfalahu Abu Said al-Sukkari ("The Completion in Explaining the Poetry of Hudhayl Omitted by Abu Sa'id al-Sukkari") is a philological treatise by the grammarian Ibn Jinni (d. 392 AH / 1002 CE) supplementing the earlier recension and commentary on the poetry of the tribe of Hudhayl by Abu Said al-Sukkari.

Background and Scope

The poetic corpus of the tribe of Hudhayl held an authoritative standing among early Arab philologists and lexicographers as a primary reference for grammatical analysis, rare vocabulary, and Quranic interpretation. Although Abu Sa'id al-Sukkari (d. 275 AH) compiled and commented upon their poetry, subsequent scholars observed that significant portions of Hudhayl's transmitted verse were omitted from his work.

Ibn Jinni composed the work as an explicit supplement to al-Sukkari's commentary, addressing the neglected poems, difficult linguistic constructions, and lexical points left uninterpreted. The classical biographer Yaqut al-Hamawi noted that the book originally spanned more than five hundred folios.

Manuscript Tradition and Publication

A surviving manuscript of the text is preserved in Baghdad at the Awqaf Library (MS 5657), containing 178 folios copied in 580 AH. The work was edited by Ahmad Naji al-Qaysi, Khadijah Abd al-Razzaq al-Hadithi, and Ahmad Matlub, and printed in Baghdad by Matba'at al-Ani in 1381 AH / 1962 CE.
