al-Taliqat ala al-Masail al-Aqadiyya fi Kitab al-Tashil li Ulum al-Tanzil li Ibn Juzayy (Comments on Creedal Issues in the Book al-Tashil li-Ulum al-Tanzil of Ibn Juzayy) is a critical theological work by the Saudi scholar Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Barrak, examining doctrinal positions in the Quranic commentary of Ibn Juzayy (693–741 AH) .
Background and Composition
The work originated when Ali ibn Hamad al-Salihi, while preparing an edition of Ibn Juzayy’s concise Quranic commentary al-Tashil li Ulum al-Tanzil, identified passages touching upon matters of Islamic creed and sent them to Abd al-Rahman al-Barrak for evaluation . Al-Barrak reviewed the excerpts and dictated his critical annotations to Abd al-Muhsin ibn Abd al-Aziz al-Askar . The author selected the title to reflect its specific focus on clarifying and rectifying theological stances within Ibn Juzayy's text .
Structure and Method
The commentary is organized chronologically according to the chapters (surahs) of the Quran, with the name of each surah serving as a section heading . Under each chapter, individual entries are numbered and presented using a two-part notation system:
- The letter Nun (ن) introduces the cited text from Ibn Juzayy’s commentary .
- The letter Taʾ (ت) marks al-Barrak’s subsequent commentary and theological evaluation .
Al-Barrak focuses on locations where he assesses that Ibn Juzayy deviated from sound doctrine in matters of belief and conduct, offering rectifications grounded in classical Sunni theology .
Editions
The work was first published in 1439 AH by the Foundation of the Endowment of Shaykh Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Barrak (Muʾassasat Waqf al-Shaykh Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Barrak), containing 72 commented passages .
A second edition was subsequently prepared by the foundation’s academic committee, expanding the total number of annotated passages to 111 . This edition included a collation of Ibn Juzayy's citations against Ali ibn Hamad al-Salihi's edition, cross-references linking the discussions to the writings of classical scholars such as Ibn Taymiyya and Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya, references to al-Barrak's other lectures and legal rulings, and a thematic index of the theological and behavioral issues addressed across the text .
