al-Taliq wal-Idah ala Tafsir al-Jalalayn - Juz 1

al-Ta‘liq wal-Idah ‘ala Tafsir al-Jalalayn – Juz 1 (Commentary and Clarification on Tafsir al-Jalalayn – Volume 1) is a Quranic exegesis and supercommentary by the contemporary Saudi scholar Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Barrak, covering Surat al-Fatihah and Surat al-Baqarah .

Background and Purpose

The work originated after colleagues suggested that al-Barrak compose marginal notes highlighting theological disagreements with the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah in Tafsir al-Jalalayn, the renowned concise commentary authored by Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli and Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti . Al-Barrak decided to expand the scope beyond theological rectifications to provide a comprehensive clarification of the authors' intended meanings throughout the text . He subsequently resolved to preface his commentary on each verse with his own concise, independent interpretation drawn from his understanding and study of exegesis works, creating a combined work of exegesis and supercommentary . The material was dictated by al-Barrak over numerous instructional sessions .

Method and Structure

The first volume covers the opening chapter of the Quran (Surat al-Fatihah) and the entirety of the second chapter (Surat al-Baqarah) . Entries throughout the book follow a uniform four-part sequence:

  1. The Quranic verse or passage under discussion .
  2. Al-Barrak's own concise exegesis (tafsir) explaining the general meaning of the passage .
  3. The original verbatim text of Tafsir al-Jalalayn .
  4. Al-Barrak's supercommentary (ta‘liq), which clarifies ambiguous phrasing, explains the intent of al-Mahalli and al-Suyuti, and critiques instances where their commentary adopts figurative interpretations (ta’wil) of divine attributes characteristic of the Ash'ari school rather than the Athari Sunni stance of affirming them without interpretation or negation .

In some instances where the text of Tafsir al-Jalalayn and its accompanying notes sufficiently explain the verse, al-Barrak dispenses with providing a separate introductory exegesis .

Publication

The work was prepared and edited by the academic committee of Mu'assasat Waqf al-Shaykh Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Barrak, which cross-referenced the text of Tafsir al-Jalalayn against the critical edition prepared by Fakhr al-Din Qabawah, verified quotations, and provided hadith documentation and biographical notes . The first edition was issued by the foundation in 1442 AH .
