al-Taʿlīq wa-al-Bayān ʿalā al-Dīn al-Ḥaqq li-al-Shaykh ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥammād al-ʿUmar is a commentary by the Saudi scholar Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Barrak on the introductory treatise al-Dīn al-Ḥaqq ("The True Religion") by Abd al-Rahman ibn Hammad al-Umar (1354–1437 AH / 1935–2015 CE) .
Background and Composition
The base text, al-Dīn al-Ḥaqq, was first published in 1395 AH (1975 CE) as an accessible overview of Islamic belief and practice . It gained wide circulation after being endorsed by scholars such as Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz, who directed the translation department of the General Presidency of Scholarly Research and Ifta to translate it into various languages, eventually exceeding twenty languages including English, French, Maranao, Tamil, Russian, Urdu, Swedish, Uzbek, Hausa, Chinese, Turkish, Malayalam, Bengali, and Japanese .
Al-Barrak originally delivered the commentary across thirty dawn sessions held on Tuesdays between 23 Jumada al-Ula 1440 AH and 1 Rajab 1441 AH at the al-Kholayfi Mosque in Riyadh . Because several passages required further exposition, the transcribed text was read back to al-Barrak, who dictated nearly two-thirds of the commentary directly to revise, expand, and finalize the work under the title al-Taʿlīq wa-al-Bayān ʿalā al-Dīn al-Ḥaqq .
Subject Matter and Methodology
The original treatise centers on the Quranic principle in the verse وَمَنْ يَبْتَغِ غَيْرَ الْإِسْلَامِ دِينًا فَلَنْ يُقْبَلَ مِنْهُ ("And whoever desires other than Islam as religion—never will it be accepted from him") [Al 'Imran: 85] and revolves around the three questions of the grave regarding one's Lord, religion, and Prophet . It presents the case that Islam is the exclusive true religion, addressing rational seekers to clarify the essence of Islam and demonstrating that prior dispensations were either abrogated or altered .
Al-Barrak's commentary elucidates the treatise by expanding upon theological points, refuting common misconceptions raised against Islam, and linking arguments to broader principles of creed and Islamic scholarship . In his comments, al-Barrak addresses criticisms directed at Islam stemming from the misdeeds of Muslims, noting the obligation of scholars to expose and refute erroneous doubts .
Editorial Preparation
The book was edited and published by the Scientific Committee of the Shaykh Abd al-Rahman al-Barrak Endowment Foundation . The text of the original matn was collated against its sixth edition published by the Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Dawah, and Guidance in 1420 AH . The commentary segments the original treatise into discrete paragraphs, each directly followed by al-Barrak's commentary under the heading al-Taʿlīq ("The Commentary"), along with hadith authentication, referencing of cited sources, explanations of uncommon vocabulary, and thematic indexing .
