al-Taliq ala al-Qawaid al-Muthla (Commentary on the Exemplary Principles) is a theological work by the Saudi scholar Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Barrak, consisting of his explanatory commentary on Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin’s treatise on Islamic creed, al-Qawaid al-Muthla fi Sifat Allah wa-Asma'ihi al-Husna (Exemplary Principles Concerning the Names and Attributes of Allah).

Origin and Composition

The commentary originated as a series of instructional lessons delivered by al-Barrak at the al-Khulayfi Mosque in Riyadh, where the original text of al-Qawaid al-Muthla was read out to him by Abd al-Rahman ibn Salih al-Sudays. Al-Barrak subsequently authorized Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Mazru' to prepare and edit the commentary for print.

The audio recordings of the lectures were first transcribed by Zayd al-Ushban and transmitted to al-Mazru' via al-Sudays. Al-Sudays then read the prepared transcript back to al-Barrak, who revised the text and added further clarifications and adjustments.

Editorial Methodology and Content

In preparing the book, the editor collated the base text against the edition supervised by the Shaykh Ibn Uthaymin Foundation (published by Madar al-Watan in 1429 AH / 2008 CE), retaining al-Uthaymin's original textual annotations while excluding his hadith documentation. The editorial work also included:

  • Documenting quotations referenced throughout the commentary, drawing heavily upon the writings of Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya.
  • Sourcing and verifying hadiths and narrations; narrations in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim were attributed directly to them, while other reports received concise attribution and citation of scholarly assessments.
  • Cross-referencing theological topics with al-Barrak’s other works, particularly his commentary on al-Risalah al-Tadmuriyyah.
  • Retaining al-Uthaymin's subject index alongside annotations indicating points added in al-Barrak’s commentary, in addition to compiling a bibliography of cited sources.

The subject matter focuses on the principles governing the divine names and attributes in Sunnī theology, elucidating the categorization of monotheism (tawhid), the linguistics and theological rules concerning divine names, and responses to theological deviations.

Publication

The work was published by Dar al-Tadmuriyyah in Riyadh, with its first edition appearing in 1431 AH (2010 CE), followed by a second edition in 1432 AH (2011 CE).
