al-Takmil ala Tuhfat al-Tahsil (The Completion of Tuhfat al-Tahsil) is a contemporary biographical and critical hadith work authored by Abd al-Hakim Salih al-Yazidi al-Yafi'i in Doha, Qatar . It provides a critical review and supplement to Abu Zur'ah al-Iraqi’s classical treatise on disconnected transmissions and mursal narrators, Tuhfat al-Tahsil fi Dhikr Ruwat al-Marasil .
Background and Purpose
The author began this project after concluding a critical review of the judgments of Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in Taqrib al-Tahdhib, which produced his works Taqrib al-Taqrib (or Taqrib Taqrib al-Tahdhib) and al-Ilal al-Kabir . He subsequently set out to examine the critical evaluations compiled in Abu Zur'ah al-Iraqi's Tuhfat al-Tahsil, a reference work dealing with narrators whose transmissions contain breaks in continuity . In compiling his work, the author consulted the critical editions of Tuhfat al-Tahsil prepared by Nafidh Husayn Hammad, Rif'at Fawzi Abd al-Muttalib, and Ali Abd al-Basit Mazid, finishing the manuscript on 5 Shawwal 1446 AH (3 April 2025 CE) .
Method and Structure
The book is structured alphabetically by narrator, beginning with the letter Alif and the biography of Aban ibn Uthman ibn Affan, and covers a total of 1,386 biographical entries . For each narrator, the author surveyed primary hadith collections and biographical compendia to reassess chain continuity and claims of direct audition (sama'), marking his personal assessments with the heading "The reviewer said" (Qala al-muraji') and expressing dissent with the phrase "it is open to question" (fihi nazar) . To highlight new findings, he added formulas such as "the author of al-Tahdhib did not mention that" (wa-lam yadhkur dhalika sahib al-Tahdhib), "and from him also" (wa-'anhu aydan), or "benefit" (fa'idah) .
The author applied specific methodological conditions in his critical assessments:
- Adding critical statements omitted in Tuhfat al-Tahsil, provided that the narrator and his teacher coexisted chronologically (mu'asarah) and the narrator was not categorized as abandoned (matruk) or accused (muttamah) .
- Documenting chains that explicitly state direct hearing (tasrih bi-l-sama'), conditional on the authenticity of the chain, freedom from obfuscation in reporting (tadlis), and chronological coexistence .
- Disregarding the verification of audition for severely weak, abandoned, or unidentified narrators, on the premise that such chains are inadmissible as corroborating evidence .
- Establishing the feasibility of coexistence using birth and death dates or biographical tiers (tabaqat), drawing on the judgments of critics such as Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari, Abu Hatim al-Razi, al-Dhahabi, and Ibn Hajar .
