al-Takhrij li-Sahih al-Hadith (The Extraction of Authentic Hadith) is a hadith booklet comprising narrations from the original transmissions (usul) of the Baghdad-based hadith scholar Abu al-Hasan Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Atiqi (d. 441 AH / 1050 CE), selected and extracted (takhrij) by the hadith master Abu Bakr al-Barqani (336–425 AH / 948–1034 CE).

Scope and Method

The work's full title is al-Juz' al-Awwal min al-Takhrij li-Sahih al-Hadith 'an al-Shuyukh al-Thiqat 'ala Shart Kitab Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Bukhari wa-Kitab Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj al-Qushayri aw Ahadifihima (The First Part of the Extraction of Authentic Hadith from Trustworthy Teachers According to the Conditions of the Book of Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Bukhari and the Book of Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj al-Qushayri, or Either of Them).

In this collection, al-Barqani selected sound narrations transmitted by al-Atiqi through his reliable teachers—such as Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Sa'id al-Razzaz, Abu Ya'qub Ishaq ibn Sa'd al-Nasawi, Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Warraq, and Abu Hafs Umar ibn Ahmad ibn Shahin—that fulfill the transmission criteria set by al-Bukhari, Muslim, or both. Each entry cites the full chain of transmission down to the Prophet ﷺ, assesses the narration's authenticity and elevation ('uluww), and cross-references where and through which paths al-Bukhari and Muslim recorded the text in their respective Sahih collections.

Transmission and Extant Manuscript

The work is documented in classical bibliographies, including Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's al-Mu'jam al-Mufahras. A manuscript containing the first part (al-juz' al-awwal) is preserved in the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin (MS 3890), comprising ten folios copied in 709 AH / 1309–1310 CE.

The manuscript bears a reading certificate (sama') documenting that Hasan ibn Ali ibn Isma'il al-Umari read the entire part on the last day of Sha'ban in 784 AH before the hadith teacher and Quran reciter Abu Muhammad Abd al-Wahhab ibn Muhammad al-Qarawi, on the authority of Abu Muhammad Abd al-Mu'min ibn Khalaf al-Dimyati, in the presence of an assembly of scholars.

Publication

The surviving first part of the text was edited by Abu Abd al-Bari Rida Bushama al-Jaza'iri and published in Riyadh by Dar Ibn Hazm in 1420 AH / 1999 CE.
