al-Tahrir Sharh al-Dalil - Kitab al-Tahara (The Editing: Commentary on the Guide – Book of Purification) is a contemporary legal commentary on the purification section of the Hanbali manual Dalil al-Talib li-Nayl al-Matalib by Mar'i ibn Yusuf al-Karmi (d. 1033 AH / 1624 CE), written by the Egyptian scholar Abu al-Mundhir Mahmud ibn Muhammad ibn Mustafa al-Minyawi and published in 1432 AH (2011 CE).

Background and Composition

The commentary focuses on Dalil al-Talib, a widely studied Hanbali primer abridged from Ibn al-Najjar al-Futuhi's Muntaha al-Iradat that restricts its rulings to the relied-upon positions of the Hanbali school without citing proofs or differences of opinion. Al-Minyawi initially began writing an extensive commentary on the manual, titled Tahqiq al-Matalib bi-Sharh Dalil al-Talib, but after completing the sections on water and part of the chapter on vessels, he paused work in Dhu al-Qi'da 1431 AH (October 2010 CE) in Minya, Egypt, to compose a more concise commentary in the form of al-Tahrir Sharh al-Dalil.

Methodology and Structure

In his introduction to the volume on ritual purification (Kitab al-Tahara), the author outlines several core principles for his commentary:

  • Clarifying obscure phrases in Mar'i al-Karmi's original text.
  • Structuring the manual's prose into numbered legal issues (masa'il) and providing conceptual definitions and background explanations for complex topics.
  • Supporting the school's relied-upon rulings with their primary and most decisive textual proofs from the Quran and the Sunnah, without attempting exhaustive citations.
  • Highlighting instances where Mar'i al-Karmi deviated from his stated framework by choosing a weak or non-standard position in the school, although the author notes such cases are rare.
  • Indicating the preferred legal conclusion (al-rajih) backed by evidence, while avoiding overly intricate pedantic critique of definitions, which the author deferred to his larger work.

The volume begins with an analysis of the definition of purification (tahara), discussing whether it is better defined as the cessation of ritual impurity (irtifa' al-hadath) rather than the active lifting of it (raf' al-hadath), before proceeding systematically through the legal categories of water and ritual cleanliness.

Publication

The first volume of the commentary, covering Kitab al-Tahara, was issued in its first edition in 1432 AH (2011 CE) in digital format via al-Maktaba al-Shamila under deposit number 5/2011.
