al-Tafsir al-Qayyim (also published under the title Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim li-Ibn al-Qayyim) is a modern thematic compilation of the Quranic commentary of the Hanbali scholar Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya (691–751 AH / 1292–1350 CE), extracted from across his various writings by the scholar Muhammad Uways al-Nadwi .

Compilation and Method

Ibn al-Qayyim did not author a single, self-contained commentary covering the entire Quran from beginning to end; instead, his exegetical analyses were dispersed across his extensive legal, theological, and spiritual treatises, alongside independent discussions of specific surahs such as al-Fatihah and al-Mu'awwidhatayn (Surah al-Falaq and Surah al-Nas) . Muhammad Uways al-Nadwi surveyed Ibn al-Qayyim's extant literature, collating and organizing his interpretations according to the traditional sequence of the Quranic surahs and verses .

Modern researchers analyzing Ibn al-Qayyim's hermeneutical method in this work, such as Muhammad Ahmad al-Sunbati, have noted that a core foundation of his approach is highlighting the overarching thematic unity (al-wahda al-mawdu'iyya) of each Quranic surah, treating every section within a surah as systematically serving that unified central objective .

Publication History

The compilation was prepared and published in Cairo with editing and notes by Muhammad Hamid al-Fiqi through Matba'at al-Sunna al-Muhammadiyya (and later reissued by Maktabat al-Sunna) . It subsequently saw multiple printings by various publishers, including Dar al-Kutub al-'Ilmiyya in Beirut (1398 AH) and Dar wa-Maktabat al-Hilal under the supervision of the Center for Arabic and Islamic Studies and Research and Sheikh Ibrahim Ramadan .
